F9 Scores Hollywood's Biggest International IMAX Opening Since 2019

F9 delivered the biggest opening weekend for a Hollywood film on IMAX screens since December 2019 following its release in international markets on Friday.

The latest installment in the Fast and Furious franchise also nabbed the second-biggest international opening weekend ever in the month of May by bringing in $14 million across 800 IMAX screens in China, the Middle East, Russia and South Korea.

Of the $14 million, $12.4 million came out of IMAX theaters in China alone, making it the biggest opening day in China for the franchise in IMAX to date. F9 also claimed the biggest opening weekend for IMAX since 2019 in both Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates.

"Summer blockbuster season has arrived with the strong debut of F9, and it's clear there is healthy pent-up demand among global audiences as big, highly anticipated Hollywood movies return to theaters," said Rich Gelfond, CEO of IMAX. "'Universal's bold strategy to launch the release of F9 in China and jump-start the summer clearly paid off, and the early success of the film bodes well for the continued rebound of the global box office."

The opening weekend numbers were released about 24 hours after it was reported that F9's earnings from Friday and Saturday had pushed the franchise over $6 billion. Specifically, the film brought in an estimated $127 million across all theaters outside of North America through May 22 and was on track to bring in more than $160 million through Sunday. In regard to how F9 is being received by critics, the film currently has a 33 percent approval rating on the Rotten Tomatoes, though an audience score is not yet available.
