F9's Early Reviews Are a Mixed Bag | CBR

The first critic reviews for F9 are here and, while they're still fresh, the critics' scores aren't quite as high as they were for previous installments in the Fast & Furious saga.

At the time of this writing, F9's Rotten Tomatoes score is 60% out of five critic reviews, with three of them describing Dominic Toretto's latest adventure as "Fresh" and two critics labeling it "Rotten." This makes F9 the sixth highest-rated franchise entry on Rotten Tomatoes.

An audience score for the film has yet to be listed as the Vin Diesel-led action film doesn't debut in theaters until June 25. F9's trailers have previously teased a number of reunions between Dom's crew and previous Fast & Furious characters, as well as a new antagonist in Dom's estranged brother Jakob (John Cena). Other promos and clips have focused on the movie's action scenes, including a series of car stunts where magnetic devices attached to vehicles are used to knock oppositional cars off the road.

Beginning with 2001's The Fast and the Furious, the action franchise has since gone on to not only spawn multiple sequels but also spinoffs like Hobbes and Shaw and the Netflix show Fast & Furious Spy Racers. In April, it was announced that all eight main Fast & Furious movies would be re-released on Fridays in various cinemas, with the last one, 2017's The Fate of the Furious, coming out the week before F9's theatrical release.

F9's official synopsis reads,

Dom Toretto is leading a quiet life off the grid with Letty and his son, little Brian, but they know that danger always lurks just over their peaceful horizon. This time, that threat will force Dom to confront the sins of his past if he’s going to save those he loves most. His crew joins together to stop a world-shattering plot led by the most skilled assassin and high-performance driver they’ve ever encountered: a man who also happens to be Dom’s forsaken brother, Jakob.

Directed by Justin Lin, F9 stars Vin Diesel, Michelle Rodriguez, Tyrese Gibson, Chris "Ludacris" Bridges, John Cena, Nathalie Emmanuel, Jordana Brewster, Sung Kang, Helen Mirren, Kurt Russell and Charlize Theron. The film arrives in theaters June 25.
