Friends executive producer and director Kevin Bright recently revealed that his next big plan for the series is to have it re-released in 4K.
"The thing we’re invested in now is Friends is a candidate for true 4K," Bright told THR. "We shot Friends all on film and I'd like to see all the shows remastered in 4K for the future."
Bright also explained that he previously remastered 12 of the episodes of Friends for a special movie theater release celebrating the sitcom's 25th anniversary in 2019 "and got to see the original negatives and do color correction on them." He added, "It's night and day, even from HD. That's what I'd like to get over the fence next."
Friends ran on NBC for 10 seasons, from 1994 to 2004, and centered on six friends in their twenties and thirties who lived in New York City. The six main cast members recently reunited for only the second time in the past 17 years to film a reunion special for HBO Max.
The special also features appearances from Tom Selleck, James Michael Tyler, David Beckham, Justin Bieber, James Corden, Cindy Crawford, Cara Delevingne, Lady Gaga, Elliott Gould, Kit Harington, Larry Hankin, Mindy Kaling, Maggie Wheeler, Reese Witherspoon and Malala Yousafzai.
While Bright has yet to secure an official 4K release for Friends, Warner Bros. recently announced plans for a 4K Ultra HD release of another '90s favorite: Space Jam. According to a press release from Warner Bros. Home Entertainment, the Space Jam Blu-ray will include a digital copy of the feature, as well as an Ultra HD version, which promises "brighter, deeper, more lifelike colors for a home entertainment viewing experience like never before." The Space Jam Blu-ray 4K Ultra HD edition will be released on July 6, to coincide with the film's 25th anniversary, and will retail for $24.99.
Friends: The Reunion and all 236 episodes of Friends are currently available to stream on HBO Max.
