Frozen: Elsa's Top 10 Outfits From The Franchise | CBR

Disney struck gold when they released Frozen in 2013. The movie became a massive hit, and the signature song "Let it Go" was everywhere, with artists such as Demi Lovato even releasing covers of it. So when the studio released the sequel, Frozen 2, in 2019, the world took notice.

One of the biggest reasons for the franchise's success is the character of Elsa, whose ice powers isolate her from her sister. Voiced by the incredibly talented Idina Menzel, Elsa became the breakout character not only for children but also for many adults. Elsa's gorgeous outfits became massively popular, serving as the inspiration for cosplayers, costumes, and even casual wear after each movie's release. It is safe to say that she is one of the biggest fashion icons in Disney's lineup. While some outfits are more well-known than others, Disney has ensured that every outfit has something that makes it special.

10 Elsa Says Farewell In A Black & Purple Dress With Traditional Elements

This purple and black outfit is highly detailed and fits in with the style of clothing worn by Elsa's family. While it is a lovely dress, it is not as striking as many of her other looks. The darker colors may be a nod to Elsa's declining mental health at this point in the movie, as she feels isolated and alone.

The material also appears quite heavy, as there is far less movement in it than Elsa's later outfits. The major differences between this look and others may be symbolic, as Elsa is, at this point, concealing her true self and trying to restrain her powers, as she was taught to do.

9 Elsa's Floral Dress Is Bright & Cheerful

Elsa showcases this dress in Frozen Fever, a short film about Anna's birthday. Elsa uses her powers to change both her and Anna's looks to something cheerful and flowery for her sister's special day. This look certainly feels cheery and the shorter sleeves are a nice touch, but the dress itself is only a small departure from Elsa's dress in the first film.

While it is lovely and certainly brings some fun elements to Elsa's wardrobe, it would have been nice to see some alterations to the dress' shape or style outside of the brighter embellishments and color shift. However, the fun and whimsy of the design make this look very memorable.

8  Elsa's Winter Dress Is Unique & Striking

Elsa wears this stunning dress in Olaf's Frozen Adventure, another Disney short film from the Frozen franchise. The dress features a fur trim off-the-shoulder collar and dark blue material which feels very appropriate for the story's winter setting. It also suits Elsa very well and feels in line with her style.

The one drawback to this dress is that, like the Frozen Fever dress, it feels very similar in silhouette and style to her dress from the first film. However, some of the more unique aspects, such as the gorgeous cape and fur trim, make this dress very striking and impossible to forget.

7 Elsa's Coronation Dress Ties In With Arendelle's Culture

Elsa wears this dress during the Coronation Ceremony and for much of the first portion of the movie until she changes during her 'Let it Go' number. This outfit has many ties into Arendelle's culture, and beautiful contrasting colors, particularly between Elsa's dark teal dress and her purple cloak.

This dress is beautiful and the silhouette certainly matches Elsa's later styles. However, it also represents Elsa's role as Queen of Arendelle, as well as her fears about her powers, meaning that she would likely never feel completely comfortable wearing it no matter how beautiful the dress is. Thus, it makes sense that Elsa changes this dress out later on as she embraces her newfound freedom.

6  Elsa's Purple Nightgown Is Simple Yet Memorable

This simple purple nightgown makes an appearance as Elsa plays Charades with Anna, Kristoff, and Olaf and is also worn as Elsa sings the hit song, 'Into The Unknown.' While the nightgown is simple, it is still beautiful, and its association with the song makes it highly memorable as well.

The smaller details of this dress truly make it special, such as the little bit of shimmer the ice crystal design gives as Elsa walks, and the movement in the lace overlay on the dress as she follows the mysterious voice.

5  Elsa's Dark Sea Dress Allows For Movement & Looks Beautiful All At Once

When Elsa challenges the Dark Sea, she removes her boots and her jacket, drastically changing her outfit as she attempts to cross over to Ahtohallan. This simplified version of her travel outfit is sparkly, beautiful, and offers her little resistance as she runs, swims, and singlehandedly tames the Nokk.

Despite its simplicity, this dress is animated beautifully and the sparkly material catches the light well both under and above water. When Elsa reaches Ahtohallan the dress really has a chance to shine as it sparkles among the ice pillars and walls.

4 Elsa's Light Purple Dress Is Fit For A Queen

Elsa's regal-looking light purple dress appears in the beginning scenes of Frozen 2. The dress is very structured and a departure from Elsa's more typical color palette, being a light purple as opposed to her usual blue dresses. However, the entire dress includes trademarks of Elsa's style and fits her personality.

It has a similar train to many of her other outfits, as the back of the dress trails slightly behind her while the front features several smaller ice crystal designs across the bodice and hem. Her necklace completes the outfit, featuring the same ice crystals that adorn her dress.

3 Elsa's Travel Outfit Is The Perfect Combination Of Function & Style

Elsa wears this outfit for a good portion of Frozen 2. While this outfit is not as flashy as some of Elsa's previous ones, it is so highly detailed that there is something new to discover with every look. The silhouette is different from many of Elsa's other outfits, as the shoulders, in particular, are highly structured, giving the outfit a regal quality.

In fact, the outfit feels like a perfect fit for Elsa as she takes on the role of protagonist along with Anna, and gives her an air of confidence. The ice and snowflake details on the shoulders, back, and belt really make this look unique, and the practical pants that she wears underneath also make it very appropriate for travel and adventure.

2 Elsa Learns To Let It Go In A Sparkling Blue Dress

Elsa's beautiful and sparkly dress from the original Frozen was a hit with fans everywhere and is still often cosplayed to this day. The dress feels magical, a perfect fit for Elsa with her ice powers. The beautiful teal color feels right at home in Elsa's ice palace. However, what makes this dress particularly fantastic is the detailed cloak trailing out behind, the entire surface of which is covered in sparkling snowflake details.

Not only is this dress beautiful, but it is highly symbolic of Elsa's changing outlook on life, making it equally important to the story as well. In fact, this song and scene were instrumental to the movie, as Elsa was originally intended to be the villain until Jennifer Lee heard "Let It Go." From there, Elsa's personality shifted dramatically to the character fans know today.

1 Elsa Embraces Her New Identity In A Stunning White Dress

This dress took the world by storm in 2019, becoming the inspiration for outfits, toys, and different artworks. Not only is the dress gorgeous, but it is also highly symbolic of Elsa's acceptance of herself and her true role as the Fifth Spirit. It is made even more special because Elsa's transformation is due in part to her mother's encouragement.

The dress is a showstopper, featuring lots of lace and sparkling details that give it a very ethereal feel. The bodice is covered in ice crystals symbolizing the spirits and Elsa's role, while the long, delicate fabric trails move beautifully in the wind, making the outfit look light and effortless.
