Finn Wittrock recently revealed the unexpected audition process he went through when reading for the part of Guy Gardner, aka Green Lantern, in HBO Max's Green Lantern series.
"I did an old-fashioned screen test," Wittrock told Rotten Tomatoes during an Instagram Q&A. The actor added that he usually records auditions in his home office in front of a screen or goes to a casting office. (His comments start at around 15:30 in the interview.)
"But the old school way of doing it was, like, you go to a studio and they would put lights and camera like a real film, and you'd do a proper scene. And so that's what I did," he continued. "It was kind of daunting and big. Like way bigger than I thought it would be.
Wittrock further explained that he read the scene opposite a casting director named Vicky Thomas, who he was a little intimidated by because of her experience in the industry.
"She sat on this dolly as they pushed it into my face on this little stool and read with me," the actor recalled. "And then like a week later I found out that I got it. So it was very cool."
During the same conversation, Wittrock also shared that he has yet to see the suit he will be wearing when he begins filming, confirming, "No suit yet. I'm studying the comics, and so I'm very interested to see how skin tight this Green Lantern suit will be... There's not a whole lot of wiggle room in that outfit. But no, I haven't really seen much."
Wittrock also teased that his friends are as excited as he is to see the suit, noting, "I'm going to a friend's wedding in June, and they were like, 'Can you skip the tuxedo and bring the Green Lantern suit?' I was like, 'I will try, man. I'll try.'"
It was announced in late April that Wittrock, best known for his roles in FX's American Horror Story, would portray Gardner in HBO Max's upcoming Green Lantern series. At the time his casting was announced, Wittrock's Gardner was described as "a hulking mass of masculinity, and, as rendered in the comics, an embodiment of 1980s hyper-patriotism. And yet, Guy is somehow likable."
Guy Gardner was created by John Broome and Gil Kane and first appeared in 1968's Green Lantern #59. Gardner has also previously appeared in Green Lantern: The Animated Series and Justice League/Justice League Unlimited on Cartoon Network.
Executive produced by Geoff Johns and written by Seth Grahame-Smith and Marc Guggenheim, HBO Max's Green Lantern series has yet to receive a premiere date.
