Kevin Smith's He-Man Revival Tells Stories of 'Abuse and Isolation'

Though it picks up where the original He-Man series left off, Masters of the Universe: Revelation plans to tackle more adult stories.

"People would see this as a goofy IP, but this is a rich tapestry," showrunner/executive producer Kevin Smith told EW. "We get to tell stories of abuse and isolation," he continued. "We use these characters that most people consider action figures to tell insanely human stories set in a very inhuman world."

Smith had previously revealed the first look at images from Masters of the Universe: Revelation, which features designs by Powerhouse Animation Studios (CastlevaniaBlood of Zeus). "Narratively our show is set up as the next episode in the legacy '80s animated series that aired from 1983-1985. This is a continuation of that story," he said while discussing the genesis of Revelation. "We're playing with the original mythology and characters, and revisiting and digging deeper into some of the unresolved storylines.

Masters of the Universe: Revelation will also feature an all-star voice cast, including Chris Wood (Supergirl) as He-Man himself and Mark Hamill (Star Wars, Batman: The Animated Series) as He-Man's nemesis Skeletor. The series is part of Mattel's efforts to revitalize the He-Man franchise, including a He-Man and the Masters of the Universe CG-animated reboot that will also debut on Netflix and a live-action film in the works.

Developed by Kevin Smith, produced by Mattel Television with animation by Powerhouse Animation, Masters of the Universe: Revelation stars Mark Hamill as Skeletor, Lena Headey as Evil-Lyn, Chris Wood as Prince Adam/He-Man, Sarah Michelle Gellar as Teela, Liam Cunningham as Man-At-Arms, Stephen Root as Cringer, Diedrich Bader as King Randor/Trap Jaw, Griffin Newman as Orko, Tiffany Smith as Andra, Henry Rollins as Tri-Klops, Alan Oppenheimer (original Skeletor) as Moss Man, Susan Eisenberg as Sorceress, Alicia Silverstone as Queen Marlena, Justin Long as Roboto, Jason Mewes as Stinkor, Phil LaMarr as He-Ro, Tony Todd as Scare Glow, Cree Summer as Priestess, Kevin Michael Richardson as Beast Man and Kevin Conroy as Mer-Man.
