The latest graphic novel in Scholastic's I Survived series will tackle a far more contemporary subject: 9/11 and the destruction of the World Trade Center.
Titled I Survived: The Attacks of September 11, 2001, this comic is a re-adaptation of series creator Lauren Tarshis' 2012 novel, written by her and illustrated by Corey Egbert. A preview for the books' cover art has also been revealed, depicting a young boy running away from the towers as they smoke in the distance.
A Scholastic press release synopsis for Survived: The Attacks of September 11, 2001 reads as follows:
The only thing Lucas loves more than football is his Uncle Benny, his dad's best friend at the fire department where they both work. Benny taught Lucas everything about football. So when Lucas's parents decide the sport is too dangerous and he needs to quit, Lucas has to talk to his biggest fan. The next morning, Lucas takes the train to the city instead of the bus to school. It's a bright, beautiful day in New York. But just as Lucas arrives at his uncle's firehouse, everything changes – and nothing will ever be the same again.
Currently, Tarshis has written twenty I Survived chapter books and three graphic novel adaptations of previous stories: I Survived The Sinking of the Titanic, 1912, I Survived the Shark Attacks of 1916, and I Survived the Nazi Invasion, 1944. In the press release, Scholastic praised how "these graphic novels combine historical facts with high-action storytelling that's sure to keep any reader turning the pages." It was also revealed that the book will end with a "nonfiction section" detailing the true stories behind its subject matter.
I Survived: The Attacks of September 11, 2001 will come out in stores on August 3, just over a month before the twenty-year anniversary of 9/11. The book will be aimed at a demographic of families and readers between the ages of 8-12.
