Mortal Kombat Co-Creator Tweet Adds to Marvel Crossover Rumors

A recent tweet from Ed Boon, co-creator of the Mortal Kombat video game series, further ignited rumors that his team is working on a Marvel fighting game.

"Wow. @JamesGunn has managed to work on DC and MARVEL movies. That's impressive," Boon wrote on Twitter. He followed it with a pondering emoji, leading many fans to observe the timing of the tweet, which coincided with the rumors.

The potential foreshadowing continued when American Fighting Games player and commentator Bryant "Kitana Prime" Benzing responded to Boon's tweet. Benzing, while acknowledging the tweet could be an attempt at trolling, used his response to advocate for Star-Lord as a playable character. "Listen Ed, this is a GUARDIANS post," he wrote. "We love you. I love you. You can be the greatest troll ever, but IF THIS GAME EXISTS AND STAR LORD ISNT IN IT..." Boon continued generating further hype when he responded, "You know he directed THE SUICIDE SQUAD also, right?"

Boon's tweets are being interpreted by many to be a point of comparison between himself and James Gunn. The Marvel Cinematic Universe's (MCU) Guardians of the Galaxy director will also be leaving his stamp on the DC Extended Universe (DCEU) with The Suicide Squad. As for Boon, he too worked on DC properties, specifically with the Injustice video game series, which incorporated Suicide Squad members Harley Quinn and Deadshot. The fighting game allowed players to have a large roster of DC characters face off in gameplay quite similar to Netherrealm Studios' other fighting game Mortal Kombat.

The rumor of a possible PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S Marvel fighting game from Netherrealm Studios came from industry insider Daniel Richtman. This would not be the first time that Marvel characters have been incorporated into a fighting game. The Marvel vs. Capcom series pits the superheroes and supervillains against Street Fighter characters. Additionally, a standalone fighting game titled Marvel Nemesis: Rise of the Imperfects was released by Electronic Arts, and featured a variety of Marvel characters facing off against some original villains.
