When it comes to heroes and villains, Eiichiro Oda's One Piece is very different from the average story. In the world of One Piece, the pirates are perceived to be the bad guys but some, like the protagonist, Monkey D. Luffy, do heroic acts despite not being heroes.

The Marines, while perceived as good by everyone in the world, often commit acts that are evil and harmful to the common people. As such, heroes exist as both pirates and marines in the story, and even some members of the Revolutionary Army fall into this category.

In the Reverie arc of One Piece, he, along with all the Commanders of the Revolutionary Army, attacked Mariejois and declared war on the Celestial Dragons.

Roronoa Zoro is a member of the Straw Hat Pirates and the man who many consider to be Luffy's right-hand. Although Zoro's ambition is comparable to Luffy's own and greater than that of many others in the crew, he doesn't hesitate to risk his life for them, a seen during the Thriller Bark arc. Zoro is incredibly loyal to Luffy and if dying would protect the ambition of his captain, he wouldn't think twice before offering his life.

8 Sanji Saved His Family From The Big Mom Pirates

The chef of the Straw Hat Pirates, Sanji is known to be an incredibly kind person, and among all the Straw Hats, he's done the most heroic acts. From saving his crew countless times to saving the princes and princesses of various nations, Sanji has done it all. However, his biggest heroic act would be saving his family from inevitable death, even when they hated and bullied him throughout his childhood.

7 Monkey D. Garp Raised His Rival's Son, Portgas D. Ace

Luffy's grandfather and the Hero of the Marines, Garp was the rival of the legendary Gol D. Roger, the King of the Pirates. Despite fighting each other countless times, Garp could never hate Roger and actually admired him.

Monkey D. Dragon leads the Revolutionary Army in One Piece and he aims to overthrow the corrupt Celestial Dragons of the World Government. Although Dragon hasn't been active for long, he's already liberated countless nations from the control of the World Government. Dragon will eventually launch an attack on the Celestial Dragons themselves and try to make the world a better place for everyone.

5 Gol D. Roger Played A Role To Lead The World To The Truth

The Pirate King, Gol D. Roger is one of the most important characters in the story. Although Roger was certainly not a Hero like any other pirate, he did his fair share of heroic acts. Perhaps the best thing that he did was sail all the way to Laugh Tale and find out the truth about the Void Century and then give his life up so someone would fulfill the Will of D. In doing so, Roger started the Great Pirate Era and played a massive part in leading the world to the truth.

4 Shanks Saved Luffy & Entrusted Him With His Hat

One of the Four Emperors of the One Piece world, Shanks is a crucial character in the story as he was responsible for putting Luffy on the path to become a pirate.

In the Romance Dawn arc, Shanks saved Luffy's life by sacrificing his arm to the Coastal King and then proceeded to give him a dream to pursue, essentially setting the entire story in motion. For that act, he remains to be one of the biggest heroes in the story.

3 Portgas D. Ace Gave His Life Up To Save Luffy

Luffy's older brother, Portgas D. Ace was the trigger for the greatest war in One Piece, known as the Paramount War. The war saw the Whitebeard Pirates and their allies team up with Luffy and his group to fight the Marines and the Shichibukai and rescue Ace. Although Ace was rescued by Luffy, he eventually ended up giving his life to protect his brother from Admiral Akainu.

2 Whitebeard He Took Several Territories Under His Protection

Whitebeard was one of the Four Emperors of the Sea before the timeskip and a legendary pirate from the era of Gol D. Roger. Although a pirate, Whitebeard was very kind and cared deeply for his crew, which he called his family. What's more, he took all the needy countries in the New World under his protection and even distributed his treasure to poor places like Sphinx Island, where he was born. Undoubtedly, Whitebeard was a heroic pirate.

1 Monkey D. Luffy Freed Countless Nations From Oppression

Although Luffy claims to not be a hero, he's done far more good acts than he's done bad ones and he is, undeniably, the biggest hero in the story. Luffy has saved countless places from utter destruction, starting from Cocoyashi Village, all the way to the country of Wano in the New World. It is his nature to shoulder the burdens of those around him by himself, and this quality of his makes people admire him and help him in return. Luffy may not want to share meat with people, but he's a hero nonetheless.
