Rick and Morty's upcoming fifth season will keep fighting in the family.
Following in the robotic footsteps of the hit animated show's first Season 5 trailer drop, Rick and Morty's second trailer shows even more of the Smith family adventuring all together -- breaking free from the show's usual focus on mad scientist Rick and his anxious grandson Morty on quests together, while the rest of the family has side-adventures and trouble.
Rick and Morty's Season 5 trailer starts off with a fast tempo beat as Rick tells Morty, "Get ready for some fireworks." After a large explosion of asteroids, the clip segues to show a variety of upcoming adventures for the Smith family, including running from awakened AI creatures, seeing aliens (and their sludge) rain down on their hometown -- resembling something from The War of the Worlds -- and Morty slinging his long-awaited laser whip. Uncharacteristically, Rick even tells the family, "You guys look really cool."
Rick tells an anxious and questioning Morty that their adventures "are fun, you little brat," as the clips jet-sets the Smith family into outer space. Before the brief glimpse of Season 5's fast-paced action ends, the Smith family is seen operating a Power Rangers-inspired Voltron to battle an insect-like kaiju, resembling Megalon from 1973's Godzilla vs. Megalon. Prior glimpses of Season 5 promised future parodies of Hellraiser, Voltron and Blade.
Even before the hit animated series announced its release date for Season 5, Rick and Morty writer and co-producer Alex Rubens shared in February that the creative team was already hard at work on writing the show's seventh season, noting, "Am I allowed to say we started writing Rick and Morty Season 7? (If not we didn't and I'm not)." Previously, co-creator Dan Harmon shared a similar sentiment with fans in November 2020, noting, "I think we're working on Season 7 right now, I can't even keep track. I wouldn't know if I were spoiling Season 5 or Season 6."
Rick and Morty stars the voices of Justin Roiland, Chris Parnell, Spencer Grammar and Sarah Chalke. Seasons 1-4 of Adult Swim's Rick and Morty are available to stream on Hulu and HBO Max. Season 5 premieres Sunday, June 20 at 11 p.m. ET/PT on Adult Swim.
