#SaveGotham Trends as Fans Rally For a Gotham Revival | CBR

Fans of Fox's Gotham television series rallied on Twitter in hopes of getting the show a sixth season -- roughly two years after its fifth and final season aired in April 2019.

The hashtag #SaveGotham started trending on Twitter on May 15, with fans praising the show for a slew of reasons including its costumes, its acting talent and its quality storytelling.

Twitter user @RR_EVERYTHING wrote, "This show was the highlight of my week for the years it was on. It wasn't always perfect, but it provided a much-needed escape from reality that I would like to have again."

Others, like Twitter user @fallen_chances celebrated the show's spot-on casting of Batman villains, including Cameron Monaghan's portrayal of The Joker and Anthony Carrigan's take on Victor Zsasz. Twitter user @AnjaRT67 praised the show's fashion choices, posting, "#SaveGotham because it has the most talented costume department."

Debuting in 2014, Gotham ran for five seasons. The series followed James Gordan's rise through the ranks of Gotham PD and the origins of several of Batman's villains, including Joker and Riddler. Gotham starred Ben McKenzie as James Gordon, Donal Logue as Harvey Bullock, David Mazouz as Bruce Wayne, Robin Lord Taylor as Penguin, Camren Bicondova as Selina Kyle, Erin Richards as Barbara Kean and Sean Pertwee as Alfred Pennyworth.

While there are no plans to bring Gotham back, HBO Max is currently developing a new series called Gotham PD -- serving as a prequel series to Matt Reeves' The Batman film. Despite speculation that the upcoming series will borrow from Gotham, Gotham PD showrunner Joe Barton promised the new series will be much darker and will tell a "very different" story.

In December 2020, Gotham creators Bruno Heller and Danny Cannon suggested that the HBO Max series will end up being the show they wanted to make. "We were the last big network battle cruiser to leave the harbor, but we were very much a network show," Heller stated. "I think now that we've realized that streaming is the new god, I think Matt's going to have a much easier time selling the kind of show that we wanted to do because he's got a movie with movie stars to back it up."

Directed and co-written by Matt Reeves, The Batman stars Robert Pattinson, Zoë Kravitz, Andy Serkis, Colin Farrell, Paul Dano, Jeffrey Wright, John Turturro, Jayme Lawson and Peter Sarsgaard. The film arrives in theaters on March 4, 2022.
