WARNING: The following contains spoilers for Star Wars: The Bad Batch Episode 5, "Rampage," streaming now on Disney+.
In The Bad Batch Episode 5, "Rampage," Clone Force 99 tracks down an informant named Cid on Ord Mantell to find out who is chasing after Omega and why. The sharp-tongued Trandoshan bar owner and former ally of the Jedi will help them, provided that they do a job for her first. Cid is sassy, quick-witted and shrewd as they come in her business transactions with the Bad Batch and the Hutts.
Something about Cid seems so familiar though. One can't help but get the nagging feeling that you recognize her voice. That is because Cid is played by none other than the delightful Rhea Perlman.
Best known for her work on the legendary sitcom Cheers, Perlman has carved out a long, illustrious career in film and television, from Taxi all the way to Matilda and beyond. While she may be making her debut in a galaxy far, far away, Perlman is no stranger to voice acting. Her voice can be heard in numerous animated projects such as Harley Quinn, Sing, American Dad!, Robot Chicken, What's New, Scooby-Doo? and We're Back! A Dinosaur's Story, among many others.
In The Bad Batch, Perlman plays Cid with cunning and guile -- shades of her wisecracking, cynical waitress character Carla Tortelli from Cheers. Although she seems like a potential ally, it's hard to fully discern Cid's true motivations. Omega perceptively figures out that this bar owner is indeed the informant they have been looking for, and Cid warms up to Omega, impressed with her moxie.
But she's not going to just hand over the information she possesses so easily. The Bad Batch first have to rescue -- what they think is a child -- named Muchi. Of course, Muchi turns out to be an adolescent rancor, akin to the one that would later tangle with Luke Skywalker in Return of the Jedi.
After procuring the rancor, Cid delivers Muchi to Jabba the Hutt's right-hand man, Bib Fortuna. Cid then tells Clone Force 99 that the bounty hunter who tried to capture Omega is an upstart Fennec Shand, though she doesn't know who hired her. Having proved themselves as capable soldiers, Cid offers to hire the Bad Batch for more jobs as they will surely need her money and connections to survive. However, Cid's ears perk up when she realizes that the Bad Batch must be incredibly valuable if someone like Fennec Shand is after them, leaving our heroes to wonder whether she is friend or foe.
The end of the episode leaves the door open for Cid to make a future appearance in the show, but we will have to see whether or not this enigmatic informant makes a return. Perlman's comedic wit and sarcasm add some fun, new layers to her character in what looks to be a fine addition to the Star Wars universe.
Created by Dave Filoni, Star Wars: The Bad Batch stars Dee Bradley Baker, Andrew Kishino and Ming-Na Wen. New episodes air Fridays on Disney+.
