Trevor & Sypha Are the Castlevania Anime's Best Couple | CBR

WARNING: The following contains spoilers for Season 4 of Castlevania, now streaming on Netflix.

Castlevania may be filled with horrific gore and evil atrocities, but the anime still has its sweet moments. Though their journey as a couple isn’t perfect, protagonists Trevor and Sypha bring some needed love to the series. With Trevor’s jaded apathy and Sypha’s kind, motivated attitude, their personalities clash in every way – proving that opposites attract. Despite their differences, they complement each other perfectly and make an outstanding team.

Trevor and Sypha first meet in Castlevania Season 1 when he ventures down into a tomb and saves her from being frozen by a Cyclops. They immediately butt heads, Sypha calling him “rude” and Trevor calling her “gullible,” but by the end of Season 2, they grow fond of each other’s company and even become intimate in Season 3. Their romance is heartwarming, while their abilities as top-tier monster fighters make them a powerful force to behold.

On their own, Trevor and Sypha already have serious skills in combat. Their individual specialties can mow down monsters with relative ease, so when the two of them team up together, their combined force is lethal for anyone who crosses their path.

Sypha is a Speaker magician who uses elemental spells as formidable weapons. Her pyrokinesis can obliterate opponents with flames, leaving them to burn to death, while her cryokinesis allows her to make large, sharp ice structures that can slice through enemies at will. Though less utilized, Sypha also knows the whirlwind-creating aerokinesis ability and electrokinesis, which delivers a powerful shock. As Castlevania progresses, her power only grows and her fighting style may be the most entertaining to see animated.

While Sypha dominates the field with her area of effect magic, Trevor is the master of weaponry and monster-slaying knowledge. He has inherited tricks and tactics that help defeat the supernatural, like adding salt to his weapons and driving stakes into vampires' hearts. His abilities are greatly tied to the weapons he’s trained with -- like his family whip and shortsword -- as well as new weapons he finds along the way such as the Morning Star and the Combat Cross.

In Castlevania Season 4, Trevor and Sypha are depicted moving from quest to quest, taking down vampire sorcerers, hordes of demons, and Dracula worshipers one after another. After so much practice side by side, their attacks are perfectly in sync and their expertise can be combined in a fluid fashion. For one example, Trevor knows how to use holy water and Sypha can freeze it to make the effect even more harmful.

What starts as clear antipathy between the two evolves into a new kind of passion: love. A part of what makes Sypha and Trevor’s relationship so charming is their incessant banter. With his gruff yet cavalier manner, Trevor always gets on Sypha’s nerves and she makes it known. Though she’s normally a kind soul who’s respectful of tradition, she also shows her playful side with Trevor. Sypha never ceases to hop on a chance to call him a “terrible human being,” and he never denies it or tries to prove her wrong.

This lively dynamic emphasizing their differences is part of what draws them together. Whether it’s hate or love, they can’t stop thinking about one another – even when Trevor calls beer “better than sex” and Sypha freezes it in anger. The catty banter they share gives off major Han Solo and Leia vibes. They even exchange the cheesy “I love you” / “I know” lines in Season 4, which lands just right.

From her time as a nomadic Seeker and scholar, Sypha has knowledge foundational to reshaping and bolstering a community. Trevor, on the other hand, is largely anti-social but does have highly useful battle tactics for towns defending themselves. While Sypha takes charge in aiding a group of people in these grand ways, Trevor develops survival skills to take care of himself when the going gets tough.

After spending time with Sypha, Trevor starts to adapt and grow as a character keen on using his expertise to save people. By Season 4 of Castlevania, Sypha starts cursing -- something her kind, sophisticated self would’ve never done before meeting him. She’s frustrated when she notices his influence, but the experienced magician also thrives because of his “power through it” mentality. Sypha changes Trevor, and Trevor changes Sypha – the proper give and take a relationship feeds off of.

In one of the most endearing Castlevania Season 4 surprises, the couple discovers they’re pregnant. Trevor could sense early on that Sypha was carrying a baby (partially due to his promiscuous shenanigans, he admits), and begs her not to name the child “Trefor.” Later, after Sypha believes Trevor dead, she confirms that she is indeed pregnant and aims to rejoin her Speaker tribe to help her. However, when Trevor returns, it seems she changed her mind and plans to settle in Alucard’s new town to raise their child.

Will Trevor and Sypha make good parents? Trevor may be a bit less joyous at the idea of becoming a father, as his comment to Sypha suggested. However, considering this will be the only child to carry the Belmont family crest, Trevor may open up to the idea of training a new generation in his family’s ways. He did come from a long line of family hunters, so maybe becoming a parent will change him.

While Sypha seemed a bit nervous about her pregnancy, she has all the traits that would make for an excellent mother. She’s caring, playful, and kind, and she knows how to take the lead. Moreover, with her extensive knowledge of the world as a Speaker, she’ll probably make a great teacher too.

After everything the couple has been through, they’ve learned to take on anything thrown their way. There’s no doubt that raising a child would be a challenge, but it’s one they’ll be able to accomplish as a team – and that child will no doubt be a formidable monster hunter magician for the next generation of Castlevania.
