Tuca & Bertie drops a trailer for its upcoming Season 2 on Adult Swim.
The trailer for the beloved animated show was posted on Adult Swim's Twitter, following a recent announcement that the network "swooped in" and saved the show after it was canceled by its debut home at Netflix. Tuca & Bertie's upcoming second season will premiere on Adult Swim on June 13, picking up from where Season 1 left the best friends in life and in love.
The Season 2 trailer features brief glimpses of the show's upcoming episodes with Tiffany Haddish (Tuca), Ali Wong (Bertie) and Steven Yeun (Speckle) reprising their starring roles. Continuing Season 1's storyline, we see Tuca rejoicing over her sobriety by cheers-ing with bottled water and starting a possible new relationship with several ladybirds. We also see Bertie living with Speckle happily, though not without Tuca bursting in to visit and cause mischief as always.
Tuca & Bertie follows two 30-year-old bird women who live in the same apartment building as best friends. The show centers on Tuca, a confident and irresponsible toucan that takes a free-spirited approach to life and work, and Bertie, an introverted and anxious songbird trying to navigate following her dreams as well as her mental health as she coexists with her architect boyfriend Speckle. The two best friends navigate their lives while simultaneously exploring the joys and pains of womanhood. The series, created by Bojack Horseman artist Lisa Hanawalt, normally maintains a light tone in its humor but has touched upon serious topics such as the #MeToo movement, sobriety and depression.
In May 2019, the animated series debuted on Netflix to rave reviews. However, the streaming platform canceled Tuca & Bertie in July 2019. Following the show's cancellation, Hanawalt posted a Twitter thread that thanked fans for supporting the series and cited Netflix's algorithm as the cause for the show's cancellation.
In May 2020, however, Adult Swim announced that it purchased Tuca & Bertie's second season. After Adult Swim announced its second life for the series, Hanawalt stated, "I’ve been a fan of Adult Swim shows since my teens, so I’m thrilled to bring my beloved fowl to the party and be a new voice for a fresh decade of absurd, irreverent, yet heartwarming adult animation." Season 2 will consist of 10 episodes.
Created by Lisa Hanawalt, Tuca & Bertie stars Tiffany Haddish as Tuca, Ali Wong as Bertie and Steve Yuen as Speckle. Season 2 premiers on Sunday, June 13 on Adult Swim.
