Witcher 3: Why Geralt and Syanna's Romance Wouldn't Last | CBR

In The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt, Geralt is not short of female company, from the Lodge of Sorceresses to the spy Madame Sasha to Shani, an old acquaintance added in the Hearts of Stone expansion. The only relationships that really effect the game's story is the choice to pursue Triss Merigold or Yennefer (or both), and Geralt is free to romance other women with no consequences. Blood and Wine introduces a new potential romantic partner: Sylvia Anna. Also known as Syanna, she is the sister of Duchess Anna Henrietta of Toussiant. However, while she can spend the night with Geralt, it's hard to see if their relationship has the potential to be more than a one-time thing.

Syanna was born during an eclipse, which inflicted a curse upon her. This lead an extremely troubled childhood, plagued by constant nightmares and lack of acknowledgment from her parents. After going too far with a prank in her teens, Syanna was stripped of her title and birthright and banished to the edges of Toussaint. The knights escorting her mocked the princess, denied her food and beat her, eventually leaving her for dead.

After this, Syanna wandered the woods, joined a bandit group and rose to become their leader. During this time, she met the vampire Dettlaff, and they became romantically involved. However, Syanna realized the relationship was too much and, rather than ending the romance, she disappeared.

After returning to Toussaint, she wrote Dettlaff letters pretending she'd been abducted by the knights who abandoned her in hopes of getting revenge by convincing Dettlaff to kill them. This is where she crosses paths with Geralt, who was hired by the Duchess to find the killer of the knights. Depending on the player's dialogue choices, Geralt can save Syanna by killing Dettlaff and convincing her to forgive her sister, let Dettlaff kill her, or save her from Dettlaff and have her she eventually kills her sister.

There's also the option to have Geralt and Syanna to spend a romantic evening together after he convinces her to forgive the duchess and come to terms with the past. Despite acting disinterested in Syanna's acts of revenge, Geralt asks if there was anything between them and if she had any parting words. However, when asked if he had anything else to say to Syanna, Geralt does not.

If Geralt did have a deeper interest in Syanna, this would have been the perfect opportunity to express them. There are reasons to believe that Geralt could develop feelings for her. After all, in terms of looks and personality, Syanna has a striking resemblance to Yennefer; both are dark-haired, headstrong women with dark pasts full of vengence. However, learning the truth about how Syanna used Dettlaff as a scapegoat in her plot for revenge likely killed off any possible interest. It's unlikely Geralt would seriously pursue someone he knows has such an untrustworthy side.

Despire being Geralt's type, Syanna is not Yennefer -- though that's not really an ideal scale. Yennefer and Geralt's 20-year relationship has been rocky, and it's likely Geralt sees a lot of Yennefer in Syanna's stubborn, cunning personality. However, with Syanna, this is likely more of a comfort than an indication of a good partner. This is highlighted by Geralt's other major love interest, Triss. Her calm, healing personality is a complete contrast to Syanna and Yennefer, and it's more likely (if he doesn't settle down with Yennefer) that Geralt would choose someone entirely different who serves as a contrast to his chaotic Witcher lifestyle.

Ultimately, it's unlikely that anything further would have happened between Geralt and Syanna. There's a chance she won't even survive her reunion with her sister, and even if she does, Blood and Wine is the final chapter in Geralt's story. Depending on what the player does, Geralt could be reunited with Yennefer, settle down with Triss or (after cheating on both of them) live the rest of his life on the road. Therefore, Syanna will remain a passing romantic memory, rather than a lasting relationship.
