10 DC Heroes That Are Darker Than Their Villains | CBR

It's been said that DC Comics is a universe of gods and monsters, and that's certainly true to an extent. Superman and Wonder Woman definitely represent the god side of the equation quite well. And there's no doubt that the likes of Doomsday make incredibly impressive monsters. But there are also those heroes that embody both sides of the equation, gods who have more than a little monster in them.

These heroes have a bit of a mean streak, which is an understatement in some cases. Sometimes, that mean streak runs a little deeper in those heroes than even their villains might expect. It just means that the villains had better be prepared for a fight that might be quite bloody.

10 Peacemaker Isn't Afraid To Pull The Trigger

While comic book fans are familiar with the character, it's a safe bet that many more know very little about Peacemaker. That's about to change in a big way when James Gunn's The Suicide Squad hits theaters and Peacemaker gets his own series.

There have been a few people to use the name, but the current one is Christopher Smith. He is an extreme pacifist, meaning that the man is willing to kill as many people as possible to create world peace. There's a good chance that he's more twisted and deluded than Punisher.

9 Lobo Can Barely Be Considered A Hero

The roots of the character go back to 1985, rising to prominence during the same era of anti-heroes as Ghost Rider, Wolverine, and Frank Castle. Lobo fashioned himself as a powerful anti-Superman who loved to drink, smoke, and cause havoc.

Lobo has a lot of nicknames, including The Last Czarnian. He earned that one by quite literally killing off the rest of his race. While Lobo might be more of a villain these days, he still occupies the antihero category and coated the universe in blood getting there.

8 Poison Ivy Isn't Sure Which Side Of The Line She's On

Batman has one of the most robust rogues galleries in the history of comic books. Headlined by the likes of Joker and Ra's al Ghul, the depth of villains on the roster goes from menacing and evil to downright silly, yet still dangerous.

Poison Ivy is one of the villains who has made the transition to being somewhat heroic. While she hasn't abandoned her mission to protect Earth's natural world, she seems to be erring on the side of being nicer about it. That doesn't change all the bodies she's stacked in the past, though.

7 Vigilante Lives Up To His Name

Vigilante is an oddly on-the-nose name for a hero. The vast majority of them could be and are classified as vigilantes, with Batman being one of the first willing to wear that designation with pride. While he's never been afraid to work outside of the law, that doesn't mean everything is on the table.

Much like Peacemaker, there have been several people to use the name Vigilante over the years. What hasn't changed is the blood that moniker is soaked in as anyone who uses it has been more than willing to kill to get the job done.

6 Jonah Hex Is A Nasty Piece Of Work

When it comes to being an ugly tough guy inside and out, Jonah Hex has the market cornered. The Wild West legend has a sense of justice that can only be described as pure brutality, and he has no problems implementing it.

If the Wild West in DC Comics has an equivalent to Punisher, it has to be Jonah Hex. It's incredibly likely that the guy has put more bodies in pine boxes than any of the enemies he's faced. And that's saying a lot.

5 Orion Is A Second Away From Snapping

The odd history of Orion is always worth exploring. As the true son of Darkseid, Orion ended up being raised as Highfather as part of a peace treaty between New Genesis and Apokolips. That worked out pretty well for everyone except Mister Miracle who ended up being raised by Darkseid.

Orion has the rage of his biological father coursing through his veins, but never really learned how to control it. Without the constant support of a Mother Box, he would snap and start tearing worlds apart. There have been more than a few stories showing the devastation that follows when Orion cuts loose.

4 Wild Dog Will Just Shoot Everyone

Everyone responds to tragedy in a different way. Some people get over the situation, while others put on a mask and start shooting people. Guess which one is the more healthy response? And Wild Dog sure didn't choose the first one.

Wild Dog isn't exactly a prominent comic book character, though fans are a lot more familiar with him after he became a regular part of the Arrowverse. In the comics, the guy has definitely accumulated an impressive kill count, to say the least.

3 Harley Quinn Has Trouble Staying Under Control

When fans first got to know Harley Quinn in Batman: The Animated Series, she was Joker's sidekick and paramour. But it was also quite evident that she was likely more intelligent than her Puddin' and was possibly even more vicious.

Over the years, Harley Quinn has gone from villain to anti-hero in a manner comparable to Deadpool. While she sometimes seems fun and comical, the darkness instilled in her by Joker still lingers. She is capable of doing some truly horrifying things.

2 Red Hood Will Sanction His Enemies Mercilessly

Jason Todd started his superhero career as the second Robin, taking over for Dick Grayson after he moved on to become Nightwing. But Jason's tenure was cut short when he was brutally killed by the Joker. It remains one of Batman's greatest failures.

As is often the case with dead heroes and villains, Jason was eventually resurrected and took on the name Red Hood. This incarnation of Todd has no problems pulling a gun and killing anyone in Gotham who does wrong.

1 Manchester Black Has An Interesting Outlook

As one of those guys who stands directly on the line between villain and vigilante, Manchester Black can be incredibly hard to pin down. One thing that seems consistent is that his motivations are selfish, and he's got no issues with dropping bodies to get what he wants.

This is a man who once called himself a "monster with a badge" and that was when he was supposedly a good guy working for the government. Even on his best day, the man is an absolute lunatic who is capable of literally anything.
