In the pages of Marvel Comics, few characters measure up to the Hulk in the raw power department. He can deliver an Earth-shattering beating while simultaneously taking a world-breaking beating. While some people seem to think this is just a saying, the angrier Hulk gets, the stronger Hulk he really does get. And there does not seem to be an upper limit to how angry that guy can get.
One would think that the Hulk was unbeatable. Yet, he has lost a lot of fights and has even been killed. This being the comics, Hulk always finds his way back to the land of the living, but it's still a surprise every time it happens.
10 Onslaught Takes Him Down
When the powers and bad vibes of Professor X and Magneto combined to make one villain, the world's heroes were left to deal with Onslaught. Hulk was one of many heroes who faced off against him and made the ultimate sacrifice.
The Non-Mutant heroes gave the villain mass while the Mutant heroes attacked it. Hulk seemingly died in the battle, though it turned out he was sent to an alternate reality created by Franklin Richards with the rest of the heroes.
9 Dying On Sakaar
When Earth's most prominent heroes got tired of Hulk's destructive shenanigans, they tricked him and sent him into space. He ended up becoming a gladiator and revolutionary on the planet Sakaar, though it was eventually destroyed. His new wife was killed in the event caused by the ship that brought him there.
A What If...? version of the story showed Hulk being the one who sacrificed himself to save his wife, Caiera. It was an oddly noble death for the Hulk, one that sent Caiera on a bloody path of vengeance.
8 Maestro Gets Killed By A Gamma Bomb
There are a variety of potential futures for the Marvel Universe, very few of which seem to be remotely happy. It's enough to make fans wonder if all the work these heroes are putting in will actually pan out in the long run.
An evil future version of the Hulk named the Maestro was being an all-around jerk. As punishment, he was sent back in time to the moment Hulk was created. The exploding gamma bomb killed Maestro at the same moment Hulk was born.
7 Deadpool Takes His Head
When dealing with the Hulk, sometimes the smart move is to take out Banner before he turns into the angry green giant. While Deadpool might not be all there, even he was able to work that one out.
In an alternate universe story, Deadpool was on a rampage with the goal of killing every other hero around him. He didn't get fancy at all, simply breaking out his favorite swords and cutting Banner's head clean off of his body. Problem solved.
6 Punisher Does What Punisher Does Best
While Deadpool's mission to kill the entire Marvel Universe was impressive, comprehensive, and surprisingly violent even by his standards, he wasn't the first. Not surprisingly, Punisher hatched that plan first and did an incredibly good job.
Punisher made things even more simple for himself, putting a tracker on the Hulk and following him until he reverted back to Bruce Banner. Then, it was nothing more than a tiny amount of pressure on a trigger to get the job done.
5 Killed By King Thor
Hulk was not the only hero with a not-so-rosy future to look forward to. There have been different depictions of Thor down the road, frequently showing him as the new ruler of Asgard. But not every iteration of King Thor is magnanimous and kind.
In an attempt to protect all of reality by ruling it, King Thor stepped way over the line. A group of heroes including Hulk made a last-ditch attempt to bring King Thor down but failed. It was a brutal death for everyone involved, particularly Hulk.
4 Eats Wolverine, Gets Food Poisoning
Food poisoning is brutal, regardless of who the victim is. Eating Wolverine may have given Hulk the single worst case of food poisoning of all time.
In Old Man Logan, Wolverine ran up against the incredibly inbred clan of Hulks. He killed most of them, leaving only the original behind. Hulk ate Wolverine whole, only to have the Mutant tear his way out through Hulk's gut. If nothing else, it was a unique way to go.
3 Gets Eaten By An Ice Wolf
Asgard has often been an oddly comforting place for Hulk. It's a mythological world of gods and monsters, where his way of life is actually encouraged. But that doesn't mean his visits over the years have been leisurely or relaxing.
Hulk was part of a group of gods in a war when Agamemnon betrayed them. They hunted him down, with Hulk eventually capturing him. Unfortunately, the immediate aftermath was a massive ice wolf named Hoafen showing up, who then ate Hulk and Agamemnon.
2 Hawkeye Kills Bruce Banner
Bruce Banner was constantly worried about the Hulk going too far, and rightfully so. But the problem was that stopping the Hulk once he got rolling was nearly impossible. As such, Bruce had the idea of not letting him get started.
At the first sign of the change happening, Hawkeye was under instructions to put an arrow in Banner's head. And during the events of Civil War II, that is exactly what happened, shocking everyone in attendance.
1 Thor Straight Up Breaks His Neck
What If...? stories pose a lot of interesting questions about what might have been in different situations. Anyone who isn't familiar with the concept is about to get a full dose of it thanks to the upcoming animated series on Disney+.
One story asked what would have happened if Hulk went on a fully unhinged rampage. The battle resulted in the deaths of both The Thing and Iron Man and only came to an end when Thor showed up. He killed the Hulk by twisting his head backward to break his neck. It wasn't elegant but it was effective.
