Appearances can be deceiving, and that's made evident in the world of Pokémon. The numbers behind the creatures reveal some startling facts that may make it difficult to see certain Pokémon the same way.
The Pokémon with the highest base stats is Arceus, but given that it's a Pokémon god, that's to be expected. There are plenty of unassuming Pokémon, however, with surprisingly high base stats, so surprising that they even defy logic at times. It might be time to take some of these unassuming Pokémon more seriously and give them a run in the team to see what they can do.
10 Electrode Is One Of The Fastest Pokémon There Is
It may come as a surprise that Electrode's base Speed stat is 140— more than Greninja, for example. Given that Electrode is essentially a Poké Ball, where does it generate its speed?
The answer comes from the fact that Electrode lives off electricity, and the more electricity it consumes, the faster it moves. Its speed stat helps give it a total of 480, putting it on a par with Mawile, Bellossom, and Octillery.
9 Cofagrigus's Defense Proves It's Not Made Of Fool's Gold
Cofagrigus boasts a whopping 145 for base Defense; that's higher than Pokémon like Groudon, Salamance, and Skarmory. Its Special Defense isn't too far behind, at 105. Perhaps its ability to seal human bodies and turn them into coffins counts towards its high Defense stat?
Its body is a coffin that's made of solid gold, so that might have something to do with it. It shares a base stat total with Clefable and Hypno, at 483.
8 Swampert Has The Highest Base Stat Total Of Any Starter
Of all the starter Pokémon, Swampert's total of 535 is the highest. Higher than Blastoise, Typhlosion, and Charizard. Its slowest stat is Speed at 60, while its highest is Attack, at 110.
Other Pokémon with a 535 stat total include Crobat, Lapras, and Noivern. It might be hard to believe that throughout all of the starters, the final form of the unassuming Mud Fish Pokémon Mudkip has the highest stats, but it's true.
7 Purugly Is Faster Than Some Legendary Pokémon
Purugly's rotund appearance might not scream speed, but the Tiger Cat Pokémon boasts a 112 base Speed stat. That makes it faster than Lugia, Ho-oh, and Rayquaza, to name a few.
While it may look like an overweight tabby cat— it even uses its tail like a corset to make itself look thinner— it can strike with deceptive speed if threatened. Purugly's total stats come to 452, the same as Noctowl and Sliggoo.
6 Rampardos's Head Gives It A Staggering Attack Stat
Looking at it, one might think of Rampardos as being more on the defensive side than the offensive, but its physical Attack stat stands at a mighty 165. That's the highest of any non-legendary Pokémon.
Rampardos's dome-shaped head is evidently less for defense and more for its fierce headbutts, capable of knocking down almost anything with one hit. Its base stat total is the same as that of other Fossil Pokémon such as Kabutops, Omastar, and Armaldo.
5 Jumpluff Drifts On The Wind To Make It A Speed Demon
Jumpluff looks so cute and innocent that it's hard to imagine it being particularly fast. Just how fast can a Cottonweed Pokémon be, after all?
In fact, Jumpluff is able to be so fast because it drifts on seasonal winds, and because it's so light it can maneuver itself around using its spores. Its base Speed stat stands at 110; that's more than Palkia and Dialga. Jumpluff's 450 total is the same as Chansey and Cherrim.
4 Blissey Has More HP Than Wailord, A Blue Whale
Blissey's HP stat stands at 255; that's the highest of any Pokémon by far, more than Mewtwo and Arceus combined. The only creatures that comes close are Complete Forme Zygarde, a Legendary, with 216, and Wailord, a blue whale, with 170.
Its Attack and Defense are a paltry 10 each, but even so Blissey's total stats— thanks to that hefty chunk of HP— come to 540, the same as Gyarados and Magmortar.
3 Miltank Is Much Faster Than It Looks
Considering that Miltank is based on dairy cows, it has an impressive Speed stat of 100, putting it on a par with Mew and Regigigas. Evidently all that milk sloshing around in its udder doesn't slow it down.
It's no slouch in the Attack and Defense departments either, with 95 and 105 respectively, making it more of a force than expected. Other Pokémon with Miltank's 490 base stat total include Toxicroak, Slowking, and Alakazam.
2 Shuckle Can Barely Move, But It Doesn't Need To With Such High Defense
Shuckle's Defense and Special Defense stats are a staggering 230, the highest of all obtainable Pokémon. Shuckle is based on a turtle, so it has a shell, but at only 2'00" and 45.2 lbs, that must be one hard shell.
The Mold Pokémon also boasts the title of having the most uneven stats of all Pokémon, with a 103.21 deviation. Its HP is 20, the lowest of any Rock-Type Pokémon; its Speed is 5, the lowest of all Pokémon (tied with Munchlax and Pyukumuku); and its Attack is 10, the lowest of all Bug- and Rock-Type Pokémon (tied with Happiny and Chansey).
1 Slaking Is No Slacker When It Comes To Base Stats
For a Pokémon whose name, nature, and the animal it was based on, the sloth, imply that it's extremely lazy, Slaking sure has impressive base stats.
Pretty much every one of Slaking's stats is surprisingly high, with his total of 670 putting him amongst Legendaries like Kyogre and Zamazenta, and it has the highest stats of any non-Legendary/Mythical Pokémon (not including Mega Evolutions), but its Speed of 100 has to be the hardest to believe. It's said to store up energy throughout the day by lounging around.
