10 Times That Loki Came Closest To Death | CBR

Loki Laufeyson is the Norse God of Mischief and adopted brother of the Mighty Thor. He is the son of Laufey, King of the Frost Giants. Being the God of Mischief means many things, but it primarily means that Loki is very adept at enraging others, especially his family.

Loki has cheated death several times; it's one of his many skills. Countless beings have wanted Loki killed for his antics, and a few have succeeded. However, most of them fail, and Loki manages to slink away with his body mostly intact. Loki and death are quite well-acquainted--in fact, his daughter, Hela, is the Goddess of Death.

10 When He Was Recently Almost Mauled By The Fenris Wolf From Hel

Loki's most recent brush with death came when the Fenris wolf escaped from Hel and hunted down Loki on Midgard. Loki had chained up the wolf many years ago, and it was set loose by Karnilla, the Norn Queen and current wife of Hela.

The wolf would have quickly killed Loki as well if it weren't for the intervention of Jane Foster, who is currently one of the last living Valkyrie. Loki escaped soon afterward, and Fenris proved far more friendly to the Valkyrie than to Loki.

9 When He Lost His Ability To Lie And Was Attacked By Odin

This is where things are going to get really weird. Loki is technically dead in the comics, but he was survived by two copies of himself. One is a child, dubbed "Kid Loki," and the other is called Ikol, which is a copy of Loki with a shard of the original's spirit. There is also King Loki, who is an evil version of Ikol from the far future.

However, Ikol eventually removed Kid Loki from existence. At one point, Ikol (who will just be referred to as Loki going forward) found himself unable to lie and told Odin about the fate of Kid Loki. Odin then beat Loki horribly and locked him in a dungeon. He was soon banished from the Ten Realms.

8 When He Teamed Up With Dormammu To Pit The Avengers And Defenders Against One Another

This comes from a classic tale called Avengers/Defenders War by Steve Englehart, Bob Brown, and Sal Buscema. Loki and Dormammu devised a plan to deal with their most hated enemies--Thor for Loki and Doctor Strange for Dormammu--by pitting the Avengers and Defenders against one another. It was easy to provoke, as the Avengers didn't trust the Defenders at this point given their mercurial membership like Namor and the Hulk.

Over the course of the war between the Avengers and Defenders, Loki began to aggravate Dormammu and the latter imprisoned Loki with the intent of killing him. Ironically, the Avengers and Defenders were the ones to save Loki once they discovered that they were being played and tracked down the villainous duo.

7 When He Was Left In The Void After The Final Incursion

When the Final Incursion wiped the final universes from existence, Loki and King Loki survived in the void that was left. These two versions of Loki had been at odds for quite some time, and the younger Loki showed King Loki how the latter helped the former break the cycle of destiny. At this point, Loki had become the God of Stories rather than the God of Lies. This was only done through the interventions of King Loki.

The younger Loki absorbed King Loki into his scepter, and he used a spell to fast-forward time--arriving after Mister Fantastic and Molecule Man were able to restore the multiverse.

6 When He Helped The Dark Celestials Invade Earth And Was Punished For It

Loki once again helped form an Avengers team when the Dark Celestials, the Final Host of Celestials, invaded the Earth and intended to purge it. Loki appeared to be on the side of the Dark Celestials, and a new team of Avengers rallied to stop this coming apocalypse. However, Loki claimed that he wanted this to unite a new Avengers team.

This didn't stop the restored Celestials from capturing Loki with the intent of punishment. However, a Phoenix-possessed Wolverine from the far future arrived to save Loki.

5 When He Was Eaten By His Own Father, Laufey

Loki was part of the Dark Council, a coalition from across the Ten Realms intent on destroying Asgard and Midgard. It was led by Malekith, and Loki appeared to be on their side for a time.

However, when the War of the Realms came to Earth, Loki showed his true allegiance and tried to help Asgard and the heroes of Earth fight back. Laufey, who was also part of the Dark Council, retaliated by eating his own son. However, Loki was able to escape through sorcery and the sword of Heimdall, and he carved his way out of Laufey.

4 When Ikol Took Over Kid Loki's Body And Banished His Spirit

Ikol/Loki banishing Kid Loki is the first, but not the last, instance of a Loki actually dying that will be discussed. Kid Loki had become a conduit for something called the Fear Crown created by a group called the Fear Lords--which Loki used to be a part of. To destroy the Fear Crown, Kid Loki needed to be destroyed.

To this end Ikol laid out a plan: he takes over Kid Loki body, becoming him but killing Kid Loki in the process. Kid Loki acquiesced but not happily.

3 In The Final Ragnarok, When Thor Broke The Endless Cycle

The endless cycle of Ragnarok was revealed to be the machinations of a group of entities called Those Who Sit Above In Shadow. In the Final Ragnarok, Thor was able to break the cycle by destroying the Loom of Fates, and this seemingly killed Those Who Sit Above In Shadow.

Unfortunately, this meant the Final Ragnarok was the true end of the Aesir for a time, Loki included. However, Thor later returned and resurrected the other Asgardians on Midgard. This included Loki, who now took the form of a woman.

2 When King Loki Was Slaughtered By Gorr, The God-Butcher, At The End Of Time

King Loki survived until the end of reality, where he stole All-Black the Necrosword from Ego the Living Planet. He took the blade and attempted to destroy Thor's last surviving kingdom on Earth. Thor fought back, but Loki, in his zeal, resurrected Gorr, the God-Butcher, from All-Black.

Loki quickly learned his mistake and tried to help Thor slay Gorr. Unfortunately, Loki died during the ensuing war. Even Thor expelled the last of his energy to kill Gorr and hastened the end of the universe in doing so. However, Earth still lived for the time being, and Thor's granddaughters, known as the Daughters of Thunder, were still alive to watch over Earth.

1 When The Sentry Incinerated Loki For Betraying Norman Osborn

This was the death of the original Loki. Asgard had taken up residence in Broxton, Oklahoma. Norman Osborn, then the head of H.A.M.M.E.R. (his replacement for S.H.I.E.L.D.) and the leader of his own Avengers team didn't like this, as the Asgardians were technically outside of his jurisdiction. Norman Osborn staged a terrorist attack and blamed it on Volstagg of the Warriors Three, giving Norman the authority to invade Asgard.

Loki seemed to help Norman at first, but he saw the havoc inflicted on his home and had a change of heart. Loki began to aid the Avengers and Aesir in defending Asgard. Norman, in a rage, ordered the Sentry to kill Loki, and the Golden Guardian incinerated Loki. Of course, this wasn't the true end for Loki, as Kid Loki, Ikol, and King Loki would emerge soon afterward.
