Barenaked Ladies Unveils Comic Book-Style, Politically Themed Video

After taking a year off the road to shelter in place, the popular alternative rock band Barenaked Ladies is releasing their 16th studio album in July, with its lead single taking comic book and political inspiration.

"New Disaster," the single off of the upcoming album Detour de Force, is presented in a comic book style illustrated by Enis Cisic and animated by Toni Huml. The video follows a young girl who notices her family is being entranced by the corrosive news cycle and seeks to break them free of the media spell.

"It is about the distraction of modern politics coupled with the pressures of the 24-hour news cycle, which is so sensational, un-vetted and un-researched," band frontman Ed Robertson explained in a statement. "It seemed like the Nostradamus predictions of new disaster were getting worse and worse, even after we recorded the song.”

The single and album comes after the Barenaked Ladies' previous album, 2017's Fake Nudes, with the previous record's title being a thinly veiled potshot at the term "fake news." After performing several festival dates over the summer, Barenaked Ladies will launch a tour in support of the new album slated to start in the United Kingdom in October.

"New Disaster" is a single on Barenaked Ladies' upcoming album Detour de Force, out on July 16.
