DC Comics is known for having some of the most respected heroes of all time. These comic icons have been a part of pop culture for years, involved in some of the greatest comics ever made. Beyond superhero action, comics have also played with some of the more soap opera elements of fiction, with a big one being romantic relationships.
Some of the most iconic couples in fiction come from comics, ones that are household names and that have become goals for couples in the real world. Others, though are exactly the kind of relationships that should not be emulated, even if people make the mistake of thinking so.
10 Couples Goal: Superman And Lois Lane Complement Each Other Perfectly
Superman and Lois Lane are the greatest couple in comics, the relationship that began the whole "will they, won't they" plot that would run through superhero comics even up until this day. They didn't actually get together until the '90s but ever since they've become the kind of couple that every other should emulate.
The two of them complement each other perfectly- Lois is the whip-smart and sarcastic foil to Superman's more wholesome and physical presence. She grounds him and keeps him humble and he spurs her on to greater heights. Each one is lesser without the other but there's no co-dependence, just love.
9 Toxic Couple: Batman And Catwoman Can't Help But Hurt Each Other
Batman is the king of toxic relationships and nowhere is that more apparent than with Catwoman. Catwoman is probably his true love but there's something about them when they're together that just doesn't work after a while.
For his part, Batman doesn't really trust her- he tries but she's a criminal who has hurt him many times in the past and he never really forgets it. Catwoman, on the other hand, is afraid of the constraints of being with him and has betrayed him more than once. They always find their way back together but it's not really very good for them.
8 Couple Goals: Green Arrow And Black Canary Were Made For Each Other
Green Arrow is one of the best street-level heroes in the DC Universe and Black Canary is one of the best period. The two of them seem like they'd clash- both of them can be mouthy and strong-willed in ways that don't really seem like they'd work together. However, even with all of that, they still end up together.
Green Arrow has made some dumb choices over the years but he loves Black Canary and she knows it. He needs her to keep him from being too excessive and she, well, she doesn't need him at all but much like he loves her, she loves him. That's what keeps them together- love.
7 Toxic Couple: Doctor Manhattan And Silk Spectre Have Two Different Relationships Going On
Doctor Manhattan is one of the most powerful beings in the DC Multiverse and is closer to a god than a mortal. He basically knows everything that's going to happen before it happens and he's extremely emotionally distant. This is a huge problem vis-a-vis his relationship with Silk Spectre. She loves him but he just seems to want a bit of physical validation every now and again.
The whole thing is very weird. He's not exactly capable of love because for most of his existence as Doctor Manhattan, he didn't really see people as people. While he comes around to valuing people again by the end of the story, that's after the end of their relationship. One of the guards at the military base they live at jokes about not ever needing to find someone to have sex with a nuclear missile and that's a pretty crude yet realistic way of looking at their relationship.
6 Couples Goals: Midnighter And Apollo Make It Work Despite Their Differences
Midnighter and Apollo have a very important distinction when it comes to comic couples as they are pretty much the first healthy gay relationship. In fact, they even were the first gay marriage way back in the early 2000s. While that bit of continuity has been erased due to them bouncing between the Wildstorm and DC Universe, it doesn't change how great a couple they are.
Midnighter is a violent, broken man and Apollo is a shining beacon of hope and heroism. Their relationship shouldn't work- they seem too different. Yet it not only works but it's just about perfect.
5 Toxic Couple: Talia al Ghul Tries To Kill Batman Too Often For It To Be A Healthy Relationship
The relationship between Talia al Ghul and Batman is hard to quantify. They have never technically been a couple and yet they've both professed love for each other. However, the problem comes in the fact that neither can really yield when it comes to the other; Batman can't ever accept Talia because of who she is and Talia will never give up the power she wields as Ra's al Ghul's daughter.
This inability to compromise has doomed any relationship between the two; neither of them will give an inch for the other and it doesn't matter how much love is there or how real it is. Without compromise, no relationship works.
4 Couples Goals: Harley Quinn And Poison Ivy Make It All Okay
Harley Quinn and Poison Ivy have one of the most loving relationships in the DC Universe. They are two women that have had a very hard go at things and find the perfect solace, exactly what they need, in each other's arms. There's nothing sweeter than that.
Harley and Ivy just get each other in a way that so many other couples don't. Neither of them is used to actually being loved and their coming together gave them both what they needed. They healed each other at a time when each needed it and their love is one of the most touching around.
3 Toxic Couple: Hal Jordan And Carol Ferris Was Always Doomed
Hal Jordan and Carol Ferris are one of the supposedly iconic Silver Age couples that just has never actually worked out. Hal Jordan is the ultimate daredevil and Carol just isn't that at all. She's attracted to the danger Hal represents and he's attracted to her stability but they actually have nothing in common.
Without any common ground, they have passionate yet messy affairs that burn out and leave both drained. Sometimes, opposites can attract but Hal and Carol are just too opposite to make it work in any kind of healthy way. They're better off apart.
2 Couples Goals: Mister Miracle And Big Barda Are Perfect For Each Other
Mister Miracle and Big Barda have a lot in common- both of them grew up in the hell of Apokolips and their love gave them the strength to get free. Since then, they've had one of the healthiest and most loving relationships around. It isn't always roses- while they had similar experiences, they are different people- but their love is such that they always work it out.
Mister Miracle and Big Barda don't pretend to be perfect- their relationship is all about work, which is the way that relationships actually work. Both of them work at it every day because their love means that much to the other.
1 Toxic Couple: The Joker And Harley Quinn Are The Definition Of Toxic
For years, some fans have thought that the terrible, co-dependent, and abusive relationship between Harley Quinn and the Joker wasideal. They basically ignored the massive red flags that made up their relationship because the whole thing was literally just the Joker abusing Harley in a variety of different ways.
Controlling her, manipulating her, negging her, and physically abusing her, the Joker did everything he could to brutalize her so she'd stay with him. It was a horrible relationship, where only one person had all the power and did terrible things to other just because they could.
