DC: The 5 Strongest Magic Users (& The 5 Weakest) | CBR

Since the earliest days of DC Comics, magic has played a key role with multiple characters using it for both good and evil. It's even one of Superman's core vulnerabilities, giving virtually any magic-user a distinct advantage over the Man of Steel.

But no two wizards, witches, or warlocks are made the same. Some of them are incredibly powerful with the ability to cast spells that impact entire universes. On the other hand, there are those that manipulate magic who can barely pull a string of colored hankies out of their sleeve. Those are the ones that Superman probably doesn't need to be too worried about.

10 WEAKEST: Animal Man

With a name like Animal Man, it would make sense to expect that the character in question has some deep connections to the animal kingdom. And in this case, that would absolutely be correct. The Red allows him to absorb the abilities of any and all animals.

But those powers fade away after 30 minutes, meaning Animal Man needs to get the job done quickly. And while his powers can be quite formidable at times, they do have some limitations, and he sometimes doesn't exploit their mystical nature to their fullest.

9 MOST POWERFUL: The Wizard Shazam

While the Wizard Shazam is one of the most low-key powerhouses in the DC Universe, he is a mystical powerhouse nonetheless. If all anyone had to judge him by were the champions he created in Shazam and Black Adam, his legacy would be all but assured.

Keeping in mind that he rarely ventures out into the open, the man could be a game-changer if he ever chose to get involved on a more personal level. The Wizard Shazam may be a bit of a background player but he could still bring down the house if he takes the opportunity to do so.

8 WEAKEST: Deadman

Without question, Deadman is a cult classic DC hero with a devoted fan base. Boston Brand was an aerialist who was murdered, then ended up trapped between life and death by Rama Kushna. He became a ghost with the ability to possess virtually anyone.

The problem is that Deadman does not have a body of his own, and cannot interact with the mortal world without possessing one. There are even some people who have the ability kick him out. Deadman is a unique hero but his powers are actually quite limited.

7 MOST POWERFUL: The Spectre

The full extent of the Spectre's mystical abilities cannot be fully understood by anyone. This is a being who has battled for all of reality on a fundamental cosmic level that most heroes don't even know exists. That's probably for the best as the knowledge might drive them insane.

Spectre started his life out as Jim Corrigan, a Gotham City Police Detective. But after he and his girlfriend were murdered, he was given an extreme level of power and became the divine spirit of vengeance. The Spectre is nigh-omnipotent, meaning the has the power to do virtually anything.

6 WEAKEST: Doctor Occult

When it comes to investigating the weird and strange in DC Comics, look no further than Doctor Occult. The man is an accomplished paranormal detective as well as having his own mystical abilities. In the world of magic, he knows where the proverbial and literal bodies are buried.

All of that being said, he's also not particularly powerful. While Doctor Occult has been known to assist other heroes and mystics when he is needed, he's not someone with the ability to take on major threats by himself.

5 MOST POWERFUL: Doctor Fate

Over the years, several people have worn the Helmet of Fate and served the Lords of Order in their battle against chaos. Kent Nelson is by far the best known of those people, and the one all of his successors look to for guidance.

With Nabu constantly working through them and whispering in their respective ears, Doctor Fate has proven to be a powerful player in the war against evil. And that is regardless of who the conduit for Nabu's powers is under that stylish helmet.

4 WEAKEST: Amethyst

As the Princess of Gemworld, Amethyst has access to some incredible abilities. Her mystical powers are derived from the bloodline of her family, which allows her to manipulate hard light. It also doesn't hurt that she's a hell of a hand-to-hand combatant.

While no one would ever try to sell her short in the power and skill departments, that doesn't change the fact that she's still young and mastering what will eventually be formidable abilities so is not currently a strong magic user. As she ages, she will become one of the most respected heroes in DC.

3 MOST POWERFUL: Eclipso

Without question, Eclipso is one of the nastiest pieces of work DC has to offer. An incredibly ancient being, Eclipso has become synonymous with fear and terror, exerting his overwhelming abilities on any hero who crosses his path.

Eclipso is a powerful telepath and telekinetic who can take control of virtually anyone. On top of that, he's largely invulnerable to any conventional form of attack. His only weakness is sunlight but he's generally not dumb enough to fight people on the beach. Good luck exploiting that one.

2 WEAKEST: Blue Devil

Much like Deadman, Blue Devil is a fan-favorite character who doesn't often get a lot of play. He started off as a stuntman who ended up bonded to a mechanical suit that he designed. But then the game changed, and his abilities became more mystical in nature.

Blue Devil is an impressive fighter with solid powers and abilities. That being said, he's not strong enough to be taking on the big threats DC has to offer. He might not back down from a fight but he should probably consider it more often than he does.

1 MOST POWERFUL: Zatanna

Zatanna comes from an interesting lineage. Her father was an accomplished stage magician but he was also a powerful wizard. She would follow in his footsteps, becoming a star of the stage as well as a respected hero and member of several teams.

Many people have dismissed her impressive skills and powers due to her double life as a performer. But Zatanna has always played that to her advantage, lulling her opponents into a false sense of security before using her powers to win the day.
