Gintama fans will now be able to see the ending to the series on the big screen.
According to Crunchyroll, Eleven Arts Pictures has licensed Gintama: The Very Final and will give the anime movie a theatrical release in North America. The film originally premiered in Japan in January, where it opened in first place and put a stop to Demon Slayer - Kimetsu No Yaiba: The Movie: Mugen Train's record breaking 12-week streak at the top of the Japanese box office. The Very Final is being promoted as the definitive conclusion of the series, and is based on a story written by series creator Hideaki Sorachi. A premiere date has not been announced at this time.
Gintama first began publication in Weekly Shonen Jump in 2003. The series, which blends elements of sci-fi with a traditional samurai setting, takes place in an alternate timeline where the Earth is invaded by an advanced alien race during the Edo period of Japanese history. Protagonist Gintoki begins the series as a freelance samurai taking on odd jobs to pay his rent, but he eventually becomes involved in a plot to save the planet. The manga has been adapted into multiple anime series, the original of which was one of the first major shonen titles to receive a simulcast release outside of Japan in 2008.
The first 98 episodes of the Gintama are streaming on Hulu, while Crunchyroll has 364 episodes of the long-running series available on its service. A live-action film adaptation of the series was also produced in 2018 and is available to stream via Amazon Prime Video.
