The latest preview for Netflix's Gunpowder Milkshake offers a firsthand look at how its Librarian assassins think and play off one another.
Netflix posted the video to their Netflix Geeked Twitter page, writing, "Hunch smunch. These women do things by the book." In the video, Karen Gillan's Sam is led through a lion-designed wall passage and down a winding flight of stairs by Madeleine (Cara Gugino) to a secret underground room, where she alerts Anna May (Angela Bassett) that Sam "wants to open an account with us." The two then spar over the validity of Sam's request in book-related innuendos, with Anna May noting, "we don't accept new readers without a reference" and Madeleine mistaking Anna May's "literal" insult for literary.
Seeking a third opinion, they bring in Sisterhood member Florence (Michelle Yeoh) for her thoughts, with Madeleine feeling that "there's something very familiar" about Sam but Anna May wanting to kill her to protect their location. Eventually, Sam points out that she can still hear the Librarians' comments, only to be reprimanded by them and told by Florence to remove her hat, a request she reluctantly obliges.
Sam's interaction with the Librarians was first teased in Gunpowder Milkshake's official trailer, where she approaches Madeleine's receptionist desk asking to "exchange some books" and receives a number of classic titles filled with firearms. The trailer teases Sam, who works as the assassin of an organization known as "the Firm," trying to protect an eight-year-old girl named Emily who got caught up in one of her missions, resulting in Sam's superior Nathan (Paul Giamatti) putting contracts on them both. Now in need of assistance, Sam seeks out both her estranged mother Scarlett (Game of Thrones' Lena Headey) and the Librarians, all of whom demonstrate their proficiency in combat and gunplay against various armed foes.
Directed and co-written by Navot Papushado, Gunpowder Milkshake stars Karen Gillan, Lena Headey, Carla Gugino, Chloe Coleman, Ralph Ineson, Adam Nagaitis, Michael Smiley, Michelle Yeoh, Angela Bassett, and Paul Giamatti. It will begin streaming on Netflix July 14 and play in theaters internationally this summer.
