JoJo's Bizarre Adventure: 10 Ways Jolyne Is Nothing Like Jotaro

In early April 2021, JoJo's Bizarre Adventure fans received great news: the sixth arc of JoJo's, Stone Ocean, has been approved for an anime release. The Stone Ocean manga ran in Shonen Jump from 2000 to 2003 and has been collected into 17 volumes. But perhaps most excitingly, this installment follows the adventures of the first-ever female JoJo, Jolyne Cujoh. As with other elements in JoJo's, mangaka Hirohiko Araki's love for music inspired Jolyne's name too, with the reference being to Dolly Parton's song, "Jolene."

Fans who haven't made it to Stone Ocean yet will recognize the last name "Cujoh" as similar to Jotaro's last name, but what's the relation? Well, Jolyne is Jotaro's half-American daughter. And while they might be related, there's a lot to Jolyne that's not like her father at all.

10 She Likes To Speak Her Mind

Jolyne and Jotaro definitely have a delinquent streak in their youth, but Jolyne's comes with far more emotions than Jotaro's. Whereas Jotaro is often stoic and silent, Jolyne isn't afraid to speak her mind freely. This is evidenced when she directly gave her father a piece of her mind. Jotaro comes to warn her that her life is in danger by an enemy Stand, but Jolyne wanted nothing to do with him at the time. Jotaro was mostly an absent father and Jolyne wasn't afraid to tell him off about it.

9 Her Stand Uses Her Physical Body

Unlike most other Stand users in the series, Jolyne's Stand, Stone Free, is part of her physical body. Stone Free is able to unravel itself into strings, with a maximum length of 24 meters. Not only can it unravel itself, but it's also able to unravel Jolyne's body into strings. Stone Free also has close-range capabilities like Star Platinum, but its real power shines when it comes to its long-distance utility. Jotaro's Star Platinum, on the other hand, has no meaningful long-range capabilities. As an added bonus, Stone Free's incorporation into Jolyne's body makes it possible for her to physically touch other Stands herself.

8 She's Vindictive

Jolyne is known to be rather petty against her enemies. She doesn't often show restraint against her opponents, even resulting to irreparably harming them with Stone Free's strings by slicing off or damaging their body parts. One such occasion occurs when Jolyne reunites with her ex-boyfriend, Romeo, who framed her for vehicular manslaughter. Even though Romeo proved himself to be trustworthy after he betrayed her, Jolyne still injured his tongue so he could never speak again. Jotaro, on the other hand, has admitted to respecting his enemy's abilities.

7 She Gets Attached To People More Easily

Since Jotaro was an absent father, Jolyne is prone to looking for affection wherever she can. Whereas Jotaro doesn't go out of his way to get close to people, Jolyne befriends several characters over the course of Stone Ocean and builds strong bonds with a few of them.

In fact, Jolyne's hunger for approval is partly how she got herself incarcerated in the first place. She trusted that her ex-boyfriend Romeo wouldn't turn her in for committing a hit and run, but he did exactly that.

6 She Wears Her Heart On Her Sleeve

Jotaro believes his emotions are obvious and if anyone wants to know how he's feeling, they just have to take a good look at him. But what Jotaro doesn't seem to understand is that he's got pretty disinterested facial expressions and body language, so it's not easy at all to guess his emotions. Jolyne, on the other hand, is expressive in both her speech and body language. She plays baseball with some of her fellow inmates and isn't afraid to ask about the ins and outs of prison life.

5 She Doesn't Like Being Called "JoJo"

JoJo's has referred to each JoJo by the titular nickname "JoJo" at least once in their respective arcs, but Jolyne is the first to express dislike for it. Jolyne only tolerates her mother calling her "JoJo," although it's not explicitly stated why. It might be related to the fact that it's also Jotaro's nickname, a mostly absent father that she grew to resent in her younger years. Jotaro, on the other hand, doesn't bat an eyelash when called "JoJo" in Stardust Crusaders.

4 She's Not As Intellectual

Jotaro's affinity for academics is obvious from the start since he read several books looking for information on his Stand abilities. He eventually goes on to become a marine biologist, which takes a fair amount of schooling to accomplish. But Jolyne seems to rely on instinct, street smarts, and good luck, which makes her much like her great-grandfather Joseph Joestar in that regard. Rather than coming to a fight already prepared, as Jotaro did when he used books to absorb DIO's knives, Jolyne would rather feel out a situation and use her quick thinking to prevail.

3 She Was Born & Raised In The United States

Very little is known about Jolyne's mother outside of the fact that she's an American woman who was briefly involved with Jotaro. And since Jotaro never settled down, living a nomadic life, the United States is where Jolyne calls home.

Being raised in different cultures likely contributed to the social differences between Jolyne and her father, with the United States being generally more friendly toward individualism and non-conformity than Japan is. It would certainly help explain why Jolyne is so much more expressive than Jotaro.

2 Her Attitude About The Opposite Sex Is Different

Jotaro typically finds women to be distasteful and it's stated in his official biography that he dislikes "loud women." Jolyne, however, is quite different in her approach to men. Not only is Jolyne seen with a boyfriend early in the story, but she's also later pursued by Narciso Anasui. She doesn't return the feelings, but she also doesn't exactly push him away either. And at the end of Stone Ocean, Jolyne and Anasui's alternate universe counterparts are in a relationship and want to get married.

1 She's Reckless

Jolyne unarguably participated in more risky behavior than her father. Although Jotaro was a delinquent himself, he never went out of his way to cause trouble. More specifically, Jotaro's delinquent activity was always solo and in response to someone else challenging him. Jolyne, on the other hand, actually committed crimes and theft in an attempt to get her father's attention. It got so bad that she even ended up in a gang as a teenager. Jolyne is also known for being unnecessarily reckless in battle, as she once lit herself on fire to get through a fight. Jotaro is much more measured in his battle approach.
