Legacies: MG Discovers Kaleb Is His New Frenemy | CBR

WARNING: The following contains major spoilers for Legacies Season 3, Episode 15, "A New Hope," which aired Thursday on The CW.

Legacies' MG hasn't had the easiest time hanging onto friends. After his relationship with Alyssa caused tension at the Salvatore School, MG transferred to Mystic Falls High to start anew. However, that transfer didn't last long as it led him into a crime-fighting partnership with Ethan, which almost killed the mortal and threatened to expose all supernatural. Previously, MG was close with Kaleb -- being invited to his family's cookout and considered to be his brother and vampire mentee. But, when MG returns to the Salvatore School, readied to face his past, their closeness is replaced with a cold shoulder from Kaleb.

While MG is happy to be back at the Salvatore School, his first run-in with Kaleb goes horribly. Instead of looking MG in the eyes or doing their signature handshake, Kaleb is more focused on reading a book than greeting his old friend. MG even awkwardly asks for a hangout session later, which Kaleb cooly turns down. Fortunately, Alaric is outside Kaleb's room and hears the chilly exchange. The headmaster requests for MG, Kaleb and Jed to go on a Wendigo-hunting mission. MG is annoyed at the lack of 1:1 time with Kaleb, given his complicated relationship with Jed. MG's envy grows when he sees how close Jed and Kaleb have become.

Once on the mission, MG acts increasingly jealous toward Jed instead of confessing to Kaleb how left out he feels. Frustrated at MG's behavior, Kaleb realizes that Alaric might have set this whole mission up as a not-so-secret way for Kaleb and MG to heal their fractured bond. MG calls Kaleb out for being like "Switzerland" and assumes he's mad at him for using his vampire powers for good -- even though they both used to daydream about being heroes.

Ultimately, an actual Wendigo ends up showing up, which unites the group to defeat the threat. After MG sets the weak Wendigo ablaze, he finally confronts Kaleb about his distant behavior, causing Kaleb to take his turn at being the jealous one. Kaleb admits that he wasn't mad at MG for leaving the Salvatore School; he was mad that he chose Ethan as his partner when started fighting crime in Mystic Falls. Kaleb asks, "Why do you think I'm sticking my neck out for you?" Before MG can reply, he confesses, "Because I know you're gonna be one of those brothers changing the world someday." MG finally realizes his best friend was hurting because he felt left out, not because he disproved of MG's superhero tactics.

Vowing to fight crime together in the future, MG and Kaleb do their signature handshake and dance routine, which ends up getting awkwardly interrupted by Jed embracing them both. Now that MG has Kaleb on his side to fight crime, maybe his superhero name will get a bit better, and he'll find the kind of redemption he's been looking for in Mystic Falls.

Legacies stars Danielle Rose Russell, Jenny Boyd, Kaylee Bryant, Quincy Fouse, Aria Shahghasemi, Peyton Alex Smith, Matt Davis, Chris Lee, Ben Levin and Leo Howard. New episodes air Thursdays at 9 p.m. ET/PT on The CW.
