LEGO Builder's Journey Is Coming to Switch and PC | CBR

Today, LEGO fans were delighted with the news that another LEGO video game is going to hit the Nintendo Switch. Now, this title isn't brand new, but that doesn't mean this news isn't huge. Lego Builder's Journey is heading to the Switch and PC on June 22, and it's a pretty big deal. The game initially released for iOS and macOS on the Apple Arcade service back in 2019. It is about to have a new console home, and a single glance at the title proves that it fits right in on the Switch.

Unlike the numerous LEGO film tie-in games, Lego Builder's Journey is actually a puzzler. In fact, its squared-off, isometric perspective of small blocky environments looks a lot like Captain Toad: Treasure Tracker. The gameplay isn't that far off either. The player is presented with their not-quite-a-LEGO-guy protagonist who has to be guided through various LEGO block stages. The presentation is minimalistic and gorgeous, and the controls are intuitive. Having originated on touchscreen-based Apple devices, the drag-and-drop control over LEGO blocks and camera rotation feels natural and responsive.

The stages largely follow traditional outdoor themes, such as forests and beaches. The levels themselves are never too difficult to overcome. Like any good puzzle game, new gimmicks are introduced at an even pace and delicately intertwine with each other. After becoming familiar with the game's controls, players will have to match block colors, build ramps to skate across, and more. This isn't a game looking to test the biggest brains out there. Rather, it is a relaxing romp through beautiful, miniature LEGO worlds.

It is worth noting that Lego Builder's Journey is a bit of a design departure from previous LEGO titles. LEGO has always been a family-first company, and nearly all LEGO properties are aimed at children. However, Lego Builder's Journey's goal is to pose a simple question: Do we only grow up because we stop playing? The game was originally developed under the title Lego Arthouse, and despite its simplicity, it was ultimately geared towards mature audiences. LEGO drew inspiration from their Adult Fan of LEGO community in its drive to explore what it means to play.

The loose narrative of the game is a coming-of-age story wherein a child reunites with their parent. This timeless, universal backdrop sets the player up for an adventure that can be enjoyed at any age. Anybody who missed out on this release on Apple devices is sure to enjoy its upcoming port. Lego Builder's Journey will release on Nintendo Switch and PC on June 22.
