Loki star Sophia Di Martino opened up about Episode 3's train bar scene, where the titular character, played by Tom Hiddleston, revealed that he was bisexual. According to Di Martino, the two actors did not overthink it.
In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Di Martino talked about the scene and the episode overall. When asked whether the train bar scene was heavily discussed prior to shooting, Di Martino said no. "We knew it was an important scene and that representation was super important," she said. "And Kate was really hot on getting it into the show because people have been waiting such a long time for that. So we knew it was important, but we didn't really overthink it. We sort of just approached it like we would any other scene and just enjoyed the chat."
Di Martino went on, talking about how the scene gave viewers a more intimate look at the characters. "We enjoyed that it was a bit more of a talky scene as they call it in the business," she continued. "So we just enjoyed getting onto a deeper level with the characters, but I don't think I realized how much engagement that scene would have and how excited and pleased people would be with it. It's just wonderful to see how happy people are after watching that."
In the episode, titled "Lamentis," Loki and his variant Sylvie board a train bound for the Ark, after using a TemPad brought the two to the moon Lamentis-1 (which is about to be crushed by an inbound planet). The two must travel to the Ark in order to use it to recharge the TemPad, and the scene on the train gives fans a quieter moment to reflect with the characters in the midst of the action. In addition to Loki revealing he was bisexual, Sylvie also revealed that the TVA was composed of Variants who had had their memories erased.
The conversation between the two has its fair share of intimacy, in a way that some have perceived as romantic. Loki and Sylvie bringing up their bisexuality has caused a positive reaction among fans, who have been waiting for the character's sexuality and genderfluidity to be noted, with references to queer characters in the Marvel Cinematic Universe few and far between.
Loki stars Tom Hiddleston, Owen Wilson, Gugu Mbatha-Raw, Wunmi Mosaku, Sophia Di Martino, Richard E. Grant, Sasha Lane, and Eugene Cordero. New episodes air Wednesdays on Disney+.
