Loki's Approach to Coulson's Death Leaves Agents of SHIELD in MCU Canon Limbo

A mention of Phil Coulson in the premiere episode of Disney+'s Loki cast doubt on whether Marvel's Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. is canon in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

"No, look, that is one other tendril of the multiverse, perhaps. I think just seeing mention of Coulson again, the very fact that it raises those questions, is exciting," writer Michael Waldron told Fandom.

Loki stabbed Coulson in The Avengers, and S.H.I.E.L.D. director Nick Fury used that incident to prod Iron Man, Thor, The Hulk, Captain America, Hawkeye and Black Widow to unite and defeat the Trickster god. In a scene in Loki, however, Mobius confronted the God of Mischief about that without telling him Fury resurrected Coulson, which was revealed in Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.

The Avengers carried on without learning Coulson was revived, and the version of Loki who appears in the TV series -- a "time variant" created in Avengers: Endgame, doesn't know either.

Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., a production of Marvel Television, aired on ABC from 2013-2020. This was prior to the current slate of Disney+ shows made with the direct involvement of Marvel Studios President/Marvel Chief Creative Officer Kevin Feige, including WandaVision, The Falcon and the Winter Soldier and Loki, among others.

Loki stars Tom Hiddleston as Loki, Owen Wilson as Mobius M. Mobius, Gugu Mbatha-Raw as Ravonna Lexus Renslayer, Wunmi Mosaku as Hunter B-15, Tara Strong as Miss Minutes and Eugene Cordero as Casey, with Sophia Di Martino, Richard E. Grant and Sasha Lane in undisclosed roles. New episodes premiere Wednesdays on Disney+.
