Lucifer EPs Explain Season 5B's Hellacious Finale | CBR

WARNING: The following contains major spoilers for Lucifer's Season 5B, streaming now on Netflix.

Showrunners Joe Henderson and Ildy Modrovich provided some insight on Lucifer's universe-changing Season 5B finale.

In an interview with TVLine, the pair were asked about how the finale will factor into the next season and where Lucifer's standing is in the fight for God. "We do get into that in Season 6, but we can tell you that his coming back is not about getting the power of God," Henderson said.

Rather than becoming God, Lucifer evolved per the series' central theme. "It’s more about self-actualization, which is the theme of our show," Henderson said. "Lucifer was banished from Heaven, so if he ever went up there he would be lit on fire, but as so much of our show tells you, angels self-actualize. We often are our own worst enemy, so was Lucifer on fire because God banished him? Or because Lucifer didn’t feel worthy? So finally telling Chloe he loved her, finally feeling worthy…"

In the final minutes of Season 5, Lucifer traveled to Heaven to bring Chloe back, as she had been murdered by Michael during the fight for Heaven. Managing to find Chloe with the help of Mr. Said Out Bitch, Lucifer handed her Lilith's ring of immortality for her to return to Earth, just before bursting into flames.

Knowing that entering Heaven would kill him, Lucifer still chose to sacrifice himself for the sake of love. Modrovich noted the importance of this act, saying, "Making the ultimate sacrifice of putting somebody before himself, so completely and entirely, was something was Lucifer had never done in his life before."

Lucifer stars Tom Ellis as Lucifer Morningstar, Lauren German as Det. Chloe Decker, D.B. Woodside as Amenadiel, Rachael Harris as Dr. Linda Martin, Kevin Alejandro as Det. Dan Espinoza, Lesley-Ann Brandt as Mazikeen Smith and Aimee Garcia as Ella Lopez. Season 5B is now on Netflix.
