Animation studio Madhouse has released a new trailer for Sonny Boy, its latest original work.
Sonny Boy is a sci-fi drama created and directed by Shingo Natsume, an anime industry veteran who got his start working as an animator on properties such as Doraemon and Gurren Lagann, and is now best known as the director of the One-Punch Man anime series. The series will feature character designs by Perfect Blue's Hisashi Eguchi and art direction by Mari Fujino, who also worked on Dororo and Kill la Kill. Music will play a big role in the series, and the soundtrack will feature a number of original songs from several independent Japanese artists. Cowboy Bebop and Samurai Champloo director Shinichiro Watanabe is serving as the series' music advisor.
Sonny Boy tells the story of a group of junior high school students who suddenly have to fend for themselves after their school is teleported to a surreal alternate dimension. Aoi Ichikawa, who previously starred in DARLING in the FRANXX and Horimiya, plays the role of Nagara, the series' protagonist. Nagara is pulled further into this new dimension by the adventurous and mysterious transfer student Nozomi, who is voiced by Saori Onishi in their anime debut. Onishi has previously provided voice work for several video games, including Fire Emblem Heroes and Dead or Alive.
Sonny Boy begins airing on the Tokyo MX channel in Japan on July 15. Funimation has licensed the series for distribution outside of Asia.
