REPORT: EA to Announce Sequel to Established IP Next Month, Possibly Dead Space

Electronic Arts will be announcing a new game from an established IP at its EA Play Live event on July 22 and fans believe it may be a new Dead Space title.

The news was delivered by GamesBeat journalist Jeff Grubb in a YouTube video stream, where he stated that a previously unannounced EA title would make its first public appearance at the July event. The game, developed by EA's motive studio, will be the revival of "an established IP," though details were withheld. "I think you'll be happy," he said. In a previous stream, Grubb teased that "we're going to see it... if we're not dead first." Grubb's use of the word "dead" has fueled fan speculation that the title may be a new Dead Space game.

Motive Studios was subject to a rebranding following the release of Star Wars space combat game Star Wars: Squadrons, which was the first title the studio independently developed. Previously, it had collaborated with EA's DICE and Criterion Games to develop Star Wars Battlefront II"In addition to Star Wars: Squadrons, we're also working on several unannounced projects. Innovation is tough, but it's also exciting and energizing," stated Motive Studios General Manager Patrick Klaus in a blog post.

"With our new mission, we're trying a lot of things and testing many ideas which you can't get attached to, as iteration and experimentation are healthy and a key to finding something great," he continued. "The team is super talented and we're all striving to make aspirational games that push the boundaries of what players expect now and into the future." Motive's mission, as described in a blog post, is to create games that "empower players to create, experiment, live and share their unique stories."

The most recent Dead Space game was Dead Space 3, released in 2013 by then EA-owned Visceral Games. The studio was shut down in 2017, abandoning plans for a fourth Dead Space installment which would have further explored the "Flotilla" section of Dead Space 3. After Visceral Games' closure, the Dead Space IP returned to EA, who have yet to expand upon the series. It's unclear whether a Dead Space revival would mean a sequel or a reboot, based on Dead Space 3's conclusion and Visceral Games' plans for a fourth installment.

The stream in question did not mention Dead Space by name, but that hasn't stopped fans from speculating what will be revealed. The resurrection of an established IP could mean many things for the newly rebranded studio, so it's possible that the mysterious title may be Dead Space or something else entirely. Fans will need to wait for EA Play Live on July 22 to find out for sure.
