Warner Bros. and New Line Cinema released the first trailer for the Sopranos prequel film The Many Saints of Newark.
The trailer introduces Michael Gandolfini's young Anthony Soprano, who begins his descent into the world of crime that will eventually transform him into the Tony Soprano fans of the HBO series know and love.
The Many Saints of Newark takes place in the 1960s and '70s and will touch heavily on the 1967 race riots that drove a wedge between the Black and Italian American communities. Originally scheduled for a 2020 theatrical release, the film was one of many that will now get a hybrid release in theaters and on HBO Max.
Young Anthony Soprano is growing up in one of the most tumultuous eras in Newark’s history, becoming a man just as rival gangsters begin to rise up and challenge the all-powerful DiMeo crime family’s hold over the increasingly race-torn city. Caught up in the changing times is the uncle he idolizes, Dickie Moltisanti, who struggles to manage both his professional and personal responsibilities—and whose influence over his nephew will help make the impressionable teenager into the all-powerful mob boss we’ll later come to know: Tony Soprano.
Directed by Alan Taylor, The Many Saints of Newark stars Michael Gandolfini, Alessandro Nivola, Leslie Odom Jr., Jon Bernthal, Billy Magnussen, Michela De Rossi, John Magaro, Vera Farmiga, Ray Liotta and Corey Stoll. The film arrives in theaters and on HBO Max Sept. 24.
