Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse's 'Bagel' Sound Effect's Secret Origin

With Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse 2 over a year away, producer Christopher Miller shared a behind the scenes look at how the original film came up with one its memorable comedic moments: animating a bagel hitting someone.

"September 28, 2018 at 10:33 AM: a piece of history was born," Miller wrote on Twitter, alongside part of a group email headed by co-director and co-writer Rodney Rothman about potential burst cards they could include within Spider-Verse. The email reveals that it was Rothman who suggested, "Maybe the tiny bagel BONK says "BAGEL!" or "BAGEL BONK!," a reference to one joke about Peter B. Parker (Jake Johnson) grabbing a bagel after stealing Wilson Fisk's Super-Collider data. The final product ultimately used 'BAGEL!!!' after Miles Morales (Shameik Moore) threw Peter B.'s choice of bagel at a scientist's face during their escape.

Loosely adapted from 2014's Spider-Verse comic, Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse follows Miles' origins as a new Spider-Man where, after his receiving powers, he teams up with multiple Spider-Men from parallel universes in order to prevent Fisk's Super-Collider device from destroying reality.

Among the film's cast is Peter B., an older, schlubbier and more cynical Spider-Man divorced from Mary-Jane Watson who reluctantly becomes Miles' mentor in order to get back home. The film was released in 2018 to universal acclaim from critics and audiences alike, going on to win countless awards including the Golden Globe and Academy Award for Best Animated Feature.

Work on the animated film's sequel will feature three new directors, though Miller will pen the script alongside David Callahan and longtime collaborator Phil Lord. It was recently announced that Shameless star Issa Rae had joined the sequel's cast as Jessica Drew/Spider-Woman, though the extent of her role has yet to be revealed.

Directed by Joaquim Dos Santos, Kemp Powers and Justin K. Thompson, Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse 2 arrives in theaters Oct. 7, 2022.
