Super Mario Bros.: 10 Characters That Need To Appear In The Upcoming Movie

Super Mario Bros. is arguably the most iconic gaming franchise of all time, and Nintendo is currently working on a movie about their superstar mascot with animation studio Illumination Entertainment, which is known for working on movies like Despicable Me and The Secret Life of Pets. This isn't the first Super Mario movie that has been made as there was a live-action film that came out in 1993.

Unfortunately, that movie didn't do well, with one of the main reasons being that it wasn't an accurate adaptation. In order to ensure that Illumination Entertainment's film is better, they'll have to be sure to give fans what they want, namely, the beloved characters from the games.

10 Mario Is The Main Character Of The Series

The main character of the franchise is obviously going to be in the movie. Nintendo's one-up boy has gone on many adventures throughout the years and fans have loved playing as him.

Whether he's cleaning up Isle Delfino, traveling across different galaxies, or saving Princess Peach by going on a journey through the strange kingdoms and courses in his world, an accurate portrayal of Mario will be very important to make sure that people pay to see this movie.

9 His brother, Luigi, Makes A Great Companion

Mario's brother, Luigi, is one of the most beloved characters in the series, having multiple spin-off games, with the most popular being the Luigi's Mansion titles, where he fights against ghosts. Luigi may be frightened easily and doesn't take as much action as his brother, but he'll do what he needs to in order to help those he's closest to, which is exactly why fans like him.

For the movie to be interesting, Mario will have to interact with other characters, and there's no better choice than the comrade he's had his entire life.

8 Saving Princess Peach Is Mario's Goal In Most Of The Games

Most Mario games don't have much of a story. The plot simply revolves around Princess Peach needing Mario to rescue her after she gets kidnapped, so she will most certainly be in the film as well. Even if she's not in it as much as the Mario brothers, she'll play an important role.

And hopefully, the movie's portrayal of the Mushroom Kingdom's princess will show the tougher side of her rather than the damsel in distress version, with the possibility of her joining Mario's fight after he saves her, as it is highly doubtful the dynamic of their relationship would change in the movie.

7 The Toads Are The Main Civilians Of The Mushroom Kingdom

Though Toads are seen everywhere throughout the Mushroom Kingdom, there are a few in particular that have made a name for themselves, including Captain Toad, Toadette, and Toadsworth.

It would be great to see the Toads play a greater role in the movie, as most of them are simply background characters in the video games.

6 Yoshi Would Be Another Great Companion For Mario

Like the Toads, Yoshis are also common creatures that are seen throughout Mario's world. However, there is one Yoshi that fans specifically care for and that is the green ally that is playable in many titles.

Yoshi is a beloved comrade of the Mario brothers that has known them since they were babies. He can also help them travel the Mushroom Kingdom faster and attack enemies, so he'd make a great character to be in the film.

5 Donkey Kong Is Mario's Oldest Rival

Donkey Kong is the first antagonist that Mario ever faced as both of them debuted in the 1981 game named after the gorilla. However, over the years, Donkey Kong has become more of a rival to Mario than an enemy, and has gotten his own series where he's the hero, Donkey Kong Country.

Though he probably wouldn't be a main character and the role he played in the movie could go in multiple directions, fans would be thrilled to see him in it, especially since he would be one of the best choices to become the protagonist of his own spin-off film if Nintendo and Illumination Entertainment choose to make a second movie.

4 Wario Could Be A Hero, Rival, Or Villain

Like Donkey Kong, Wario is another popular rival of Mario's. In fact, he'd be more likely to be in the movie due to his relationship with the Mario brothers, while Donkey Kong has created a stronger identity for himself where he doesn't need Mario as much to be popular.

His character could also go in multiple directions as he has teamed up with both the heroes and the villains in the past.

3 If Wario Is In The Movie, Waluigi Should Be Too

Who could ever leave out Waluigi? Well, besides Smash Bros. Waluigi is Wario's closest friend and Luigi's biggest rival. Despite having a lot of fans, he doesn't get nearly as much recognition as he deserves, so it would be a delightful surprise to see him in the film.

He and Wario have always made a comedic duo, so leaving him out while putting Wario in or vice versa never lives up to the potential they have as a team.

2 Bowser Jr. Is A Great Antagonist

Bowser Jr., despite being a child, is actually one of the best antagonists in the series. He was the main antagonist of Super Mario Sunshine, going as far as to disguise himself as Mario while committing crimes on Isle Delfino, which resulted in the superstar getting thrown in jail.

Bowser Jr. isn't completely evil, however, as he proved in the newest entry of the series, Bowser's Fury. After all, he just wants to make his father proud.

1 Bowser Is The Main Villain Of The Series

Bowser is one of the best villains in any video game, as no matter how many times Mario defeats him, he never gives up and always comes up with a new way to achieve his goals. It would be a shock if he's not the main antagonist of the film as fans would be disappointed if he isn't.

It will be awesome to see an action-packed battle between Bowser and Mario, and could possibly be even better than the fights against him from the games.
