Misha Collins wants in on Jensen Ackles' Supernatural spinoff series, The Winchesters.
Collins, who played the angel Castiel on long-running CW series Supernatural alongside Ackles' Dean Winchester, responded to his former co-star's announcement of the prequel series on Twitter. "Seems like this show would benefit from a time-traveling angel-in-a-trenchcoat character. Just saying...," Collins said.
Collins first appeared as Castiel in Season 4 of Supernatural in 2008 and made his last appearance as the character in the show's 15th and final season. While Ackles is set to reprise his role as Dean Winchester in the prequel as the series' narrator, which is currently in development at The CW with a script commitment, no other casting information for The Winchesters has been revealed. The series will be written by another Supernatural alum Robbie Thompson, who also served as a producer and writer on the original series.
Told from Dean's perspective, The Winchesters will focus on Sam and Dean Winchester's parents, John and Mary Winchester, in the early days of their "epic, love story," and will follow the two characters as they "put it all on the line to not only save their love but the entire world." The series will be executive produced by Jensen and Daneel Ackles through their production company Chaos Machine Productions.
"When Danneel and I formed Chaos Machine Productions, we knew the first story we wanted to tell was the story of John and Mary Winchester, or rather the Supernatural origin story," Ackles said. "I always felt like my character, Dean, would have wanted to know more about his parents' relationship and how it came to be. So I love the thought of having him take us on this journey."
Recently, Jared Padalecki, who played Dean's brother Sam Winchester in the CW series, stated that Ackles had not told him that a prequel series was in development. "Dude. Happy for you," Padalecki said to Ackles on Twitter. "Wish I heard about this some way other than Twitter. I'm excited to watch, but bummed that Sam Winchester had no involvement whatsoever." In response to a Supernatural fan's question about whether this exchange between the two actors was a "bad joke," Padalecki said, "No. It's not. This is the first I've heard about it. I'm gutted."
Created by Eric Kripke (The Boys) and starring Ackles and Padalecki as monster-hunting brothers, Sam and Dean Winchester, Supernatural ran on The CW for 15 seasons, wrapping its 327-episode run on Nov. 19, 2020. All 15 seasons of Supernatural are currently streaming on Netflix.
