Amazon Studios has released new character art for its upcoming original animated series The Legend of Vox Machina, as well as a new video detailing the process of designing characters for the show.
The new behind-the-scenes video takes an in-depth look at how the heroes of Vox Machina were adapted from their tabletop role-playing origins and redesigned by veteran character designer Phil Bourassa, best known for his work on DC animated projects such as Young Justice, Batman: Bad Blood and Justice League. The video also features a few hints about what the team is working on next and the future of the series.
Amazon Studios describes The Legend of Vox Machina as "a group of second-rate adventurers on a quest to save the realm from terrifying monsters and dark magical forces. Throughout the first season, our characters will face undead giants, overthrow a sinister necromancer, and confront a powerful curse that has taken root inside their own group. Through it all, they learn how to function as a team, and discover they’re much more than that: they’re family."
The show is an adaptation of the tabletop role-playing sessions hosted by Critical Role, a popular web series that features prominent voice actors playing through RPG campaigns with each other. The Vox Machina campaign featured Matthew Mercer as the game master, with Laura Bailey, Taliesin Jaffe, Ashley Johnson, Liam O’Brien, Marisha Ray, Sam Riegel and Travis Willingham playing the roles of the Vox Machina adventuring party. The players from the game are all reprising their roles, as well as serving as executive producers for the new animated series.
The Legend of Vox Machina was originally intended to be a one-off, 22 minute animated special. In 2019, Critical Role launched a Kickstarter campaign to crowdfund the special, initially asking for $750,000 USD. That goal was met within the first hour, and by the end of the campaign a month and a half later, over $11 million USD was raised for the project. Later that year, it was announced that Amazon Studios had become a partner on a project and that the animated special was being expanded into a two-season series to be released exclusively on Amazon Prime Video. The series is scheduled to premiere sometime before the end of 2021.
