WARNING: The following contains spoilers for The Mosquito Coast Season 1, Episode 7, "The Glass Sandwich" on Apple TV+.
In The Mosquito Coast, Allie's (Justin Theroux) family has begun to worry about him as they flee America. The more delusional he gets, the more danger he's putting them in as they try to navigate the sinister Mexican terrain in hopes of getting to his eco-terrorist allies in Guatemala. However, thanks to a dramatic prison break, Allie's family has been broken beyond repair.
Early on, Margot wants to go back to America to face the music with Allie. She just wants their kids to live a normal life and has no problem going to jail with Allie if it means Charlie and Dina will be taken in by her parents. Allie selfishly refuses to accept this, however, and as they garner resources to keep making their trek, Charlie ends up killing a cartel member who's been hunting them.
The boy's arrested, but Allie hatches an ambitious breakout plot that will use the women as tools. With Margot blowing up cars in the streets, and Dina aiding as a distraction, he slips into the cell to steal back the boy after the station's vacated. The duo then goes through the storm drain in a scary moment that sees Charlie almost drown. Eventually, they make it out, but while they sail off in a boat Allie bought, it's not a triumphant scene. The victory's undercut by the monster Allie is becoming, leaving the family to wonder if this is who he really is, and if the kind genius they've known their whole lives was just a front.
As desperate as he is, Allie's being unreasonably demanding of Margot, not caring if her life's at risk, while also making it clear to Dina she has to subscribe to everything he says, almost as if he's a dictator. Things are the worst for Charlie, though, because he's accustomed to his dad being compassionate and encouraging. Now, Charlie, who's always backed his father, even against his mom and sister, sees what they were thinking all along.
As the families ship off, the looks on their faces say it all. They don't trust Allie anymore and believe he'll get them killed, which suggests they may now consider him the enemy. And to make matters worse, Allie begins laughing and crying while staring at the sunset, alluding to the fact that he's losing his sense of reality as the run from the law continues.
Starring Justin Theroux, Melissa George, Logan Polish and Gabriel Bateman, The Mosquito Coast airs Fridays on Apple TV+.
