There are many different ways to rank the various different crew members of the USS Orville ranging from loveable to hilarious, but given the futuristic and science-based setting of the series, we're going to explore the intelligence of The Orville's wide assortment of characters to see which crew member is the smartest.

10 Lt. Dann Is A Gifted And Creative Engineer With A Unique Personality

Lt. Dann (get it?) is an engineer who made a few small appearances in The Orville engine room before he became a more frequent presence on the series due to his fun and loveable personality, though most of the crew seems to find him kind of boring and annoying.

Regardless of their personal thoughts on the alien engineering member, he has proven to be quite useful in his department and helped figure out a number of problems despite coming off as one of the less intelligent members due to his usual comments.

9 Lt. Gordon Malloy Is One Of The Best Pilots In The Union

Now if we were discussing some of the most hilarious or even immature crew members of The Orville then Lt. Gordon Malloy would be much higher on the list, as he stands out among the crew due to his love of practical jokes and his comedic friendships with other crew members.

However, while Malloy is a galaxy-renowned pilot and the most capable helmsman on The Orville, he isn't always the quickest and has even admitted as much himself when he briefly considered moving up the ranks.

8 Talla Keyali Is Known For Her Strength And Problem-Solving

The Orville has seen a couple of different Xeleyan security officers join the crew members over the course of the series, as their race is known for increased strength and durability due to the heavier gravity of their homeworld.

Talla Keyali was the second Xeleyan to join the crew who followed in her family's military footsteps and had a bit more experience than the previous recruit Alara Kitan, which she showcased by being able to quickly solve problems when placed in command situations.

7 Lt Cdr. Bortus Has A Quick Mind But Is Clueless To Human Customs

Lieutenant Commander Bortus is an alien from the Moclan race that is all genetically male, though many episodes explore the alien society and its belief system that allows The Orville to explore real-world social issues like trans rights.

Bortus himself is forced to question many of his own beliefs that prove he has an open and questioning mind that is often reflected in his work on the bridge as one of the ship's highest-ranked officers, though his naivete to human customs is often played for laughs among the crew and fans watching that might make him seem less intelligent.

6 Yaphit The Amorphous Blob Is A Brilliant But Crude Engineer

The Orville features a number of fantastic alien designs for the various members of the crew, though one of the most unique is the amorphous green blob named Yaphit, who is hilariously voiced by comedian Norm MacDonald.

Yaphit may be best known for his sometimes crude advances on the ship's Chief Medical Officer, though the lieutenant is also a brilliant engineer who is able to squeeze into places and accomplish tasks easier than other officers. He also proved his quick thinking during a battle with a powerful Kaylon android when he oozed through the machine's body to short-circuit the invading enemy.

5 Captain Ed Mercer Is A Creative Leader With A Sharp Wit

The Captain of the USS Orville is series creator MacFarlane's Ed Mercer, who finally got his own command after a lifetime of dreaming of his own ship despite a few troubled moments in his career and a failed marriage with his future First Officer.

However, he quickly proved he was the right man for the job thanks to his creativity and bravery, which managed to get the Orville out of a number of dangerous situations during the Union's war with the Krill while also showcasing his diplomacy by leading a number of successful peace accords.

4 First Officer Kelly Grayson Is Able To Make Quick World-Saving Decisions

While the First Officer is on hand to back up the captain of the ship and take over when necessary while handling their own share of administrative duties, Commander Kelly Grayson has consistently gone above and beyond and should have her own ship at this point in her career.

While she remains with The Orville for a number of reasons including her long association with Captain Mercer, it's also because she is in the perfect position to help save the world with important decisions made on the fly, like when she risked her life to ally with Union enemies the Krill in order to stop the larger Kaylon threat.

3 Dr. Claire Finn Lent Her Experience To The Orville As Chief Medical Officer

When Captain Mercer took command of the Orville he was surprised to learn that Dr. Claire Finn was his Chief Medical Officer, given her impressive history with the Union and the initial reputation of the ship among the rest of the fleet.

However, Dr. Finn revealed that she had requested the position when she learned that the ship would have a new inexperienced captain, and she felt she could help the most by joining the Orville. This turned out to be a very good decision as she became an invaluable member of the team who was able to quickly adapt to any situation she encountered.

2 Lt Cdr. John LaMarr's High Aptitude Earned His Chief Engineer Promotion

When Lt. John LaMarr first introduced himself to Lt. Malloy when the new helmsman joined the crew of the Orville alongside Captain Mercer, he was the ship's navigator and a hilarious accomplice in many of Malloy's pranks.

After being reprimanded for one of those pranks, LaMarr's incredibly high aptitude scores and academic grades made him one of the smartest officers on the ship. This led to his promotion to Lieutenant Commander and Chief of Engineering, where he helped save the ship on many occasions with innovative new ideas that proved his intelligence.

1 Isaac Is A Kaylon Android With An Unparalleled Computer Brain

The most intelligent crew member on the ship is ironically also the target of many of the practical jokes that occur on The Orville, as the artificial lifeform named Isaac is an android with a computer brain filled with the accumulated knowledge of his entire race of beings known as the Kaylon.

Isaac's only area of study is with humanity itself, as he was assigned to the Orville by the Kaylon to learn about human culture and emotions. His study led to an intriguing relationship with Dr. Finn and her two sons that led to his further loyalty to the Orville when the Kaylon revealed their true intentions to wipe out humanity.
