Tokyo Revengers Reveals a New Side to Mikey | CBR

WARNING: The following contains spoilers for Tokyo Revengers Episode 11, "Respect," now streaming on Crunchyroll.

Mikey has become a fast fan-favorite since Tokyo Revengers started airing. He's a formidable leader, a total badass and is principled, despite his background as a delinquent. With his kick capable of knocking out guys who are twice his size, he's also one of the strongest characters in the series. But Mikey can't be strong all the time, and in Episode 11, we see a more vulnerable side to him when he comes close to losing his friend.

In "Respect," as the sound of sirens forces the Moebius members who are fighting Takemichi and his friends to flee, it's clear that Toman has soundly defeated the remaining members of Moebius -- save for Hanma, who only has eyes for Mikey. He taunts him, warning him that he hasn't seen the last of him: Hanma's true role lies in Valhalla where he is the first vice commander. And Valhalla, he promises, will never let Toman know peace. As soon as Hanma leaves, Mikey is on his motorcycle and racing towards the hospital.

Meanwhile, in an ambulance, Draken's condition worsens by the second. Takemichi asks him to take care of Mikey for him before he goes into cardiac arrest. The paramedics immediately start CPR but there's no pulse, and Draken is immediately taken into surgery when they reach the hospital, leaving the rest of Takemichi's friends, including Peh-yan and Mitsuya, to wait and see what happens when they arrive.

When Mikey joins them -- his face still showing the aftermath of the fight with Hanma -- his gaze is steady and unwavering, showing no hint of the panic that everyone else is feeling. Mikey tells them that Draken once promised that he would rule the world with Mikey and help create a new age of delinquents. Therefore, Draken will not die because he will not break his promise. Seeing Mikey smile instantly dispels their worries. After all, if Mikey is this sure that his best friend will pull through, why should they doubt him?

Draken's surgery is a success. But while Mitsuya heads out to let the rest of Toman know, Mikey quietly slips away. As soon as he's alone, he breaks down, crying out of relief and fear. Although he had put up a tough front, deep down, he was terrified that he was going to lose Draken. Draken is not only Toman's heart (the group was corrupted following Draken's death in the past timeline), but he's also Mikey's. And yet he can't afford to show his emotions, even if he's scared. If the "Invincible Mikey" crumbles then Toman will, too. That gives Mikey no outlet; his emotions have nowhere to go but inward.

Meanwhile, when Takemichi visits Draken in the hospital, he's a whole new person. His shirt is not buttoned correctly and he's wearing shorts that say "OUTLAW" over his crotch, along with purple sunglasses. He's immediately put in his place by Draken, who doesn't seem to want to let him bask in any of the glory that comes with defeating Moebius and saving the vice commander, which perturbs Takemichi.

But then Draken hands Mikey's gift to him: a Toman uniform, the one that Mikey wore when he first formed Toman -- the clearest sign of Mikey's gratitude. By saving Draken, Takemichi saved Toman. It's a heavy and significant weight for him to bear, one that Takemichi isn't quite sure he's ready for yet. Draken simply tells him to talk to Mikey directly.

Ever since the fight with Moebius, Mikey has been feeling uneasy in Tokyo Revengers. He's not sure how everything fits together: Hanma trying to break Toman up, Kiyomasa trying to kill Draken, or how Takemichi seems to know what will happen before it happens. So, in Episode 11, he finally faces Takemichi and asks who he is. It's not the first time that Mikey has questioned Takemichi's identity but he seems more certain than ever that he's not an ordinary middle-schooler. But the tension soon breaks with Mikey brushing it aside and thanking Takemichi instead.

His job done, Takemichi returns to his present timeline after giving Hina a four-leaf clover necklace. At first, it doesn't seem like anything has changed but not only is Akkun alive and well, and getting ready to open to start his dream job as a hairstylist, but Hina is also alive. Whether or not Takemichi has truly succeeded in changing the future is a question for next week's episode.
