X-Men Star Says Hugh Jackman Was 'Put Through the Wringer' On Set

X-Men star Anna Paquin discussed her friendship with Hugh Jackman on the set of the first movie and how difficult it was for him to shoot it.

In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Paquin was asked who she was closest to while shooting the X-Men movies. "Hugh was definitely my best friend on the first one," she answered. "Then they started bringing in cast members that were closer to my age...there was like a kind of younger little gaggle of late teens, 20-somethings, but Hugh was the person I was always closest to because I had all my scenes with him and he's just wonderful."

Paquin also discussed Jackman's resilience while going through the difficult filming process on X-Men. "He is still a lovely, gracious human being, but he got put through the wringer on that first one and never ever complained. [It would] be minus-40 [degrees], he's being dropped off some building onto his back over and over and over again and [he] still has all the time in the world to just be a nice normal person."

She concluded with a specific story of the two of them bonding during shooting. "We were doing that truck stop at the very beginning. He had his claws out but he's also supposed to be smoking that cigar. I did have to pick cigar out of his teeth because he actually couldn't do it with his claws without causing personal damage. But what are friends for?"

The first X-Men movie was released in 2000 and is largely credited with helping to revitalize interest in the superhero genre. It was also notable for being the debut of Jackman as Wolverine, a role he would reprise in nine subsequent movies before retiring his performance in 2017's Logan.
