Every now and again, a game throws players a boon in the form of a follower, sidekick, or otherwise useful addition to the party in order to help pave the way through something that could have otherwise been a chore without them. Sometimes they are useful to the plot, giving additional information and providing the party with a valuable tool that would have otherwise been lacking.
Other times, there are characters that feel like they are there solely to add an extra level of pain. There they are, stuck with the player while they are just trying to progress the plot. These obnoxious sidekicks turn themselves into fodder, memes, and everything else but useful without some serious work from the player— if they get there at all.
10 Wilbur (Sacred) Is Only Good For Dragon Fodder
Escort missions are rough as is, but hidden within the depths of Sacred there is an escort mission that really takes the cake. The player becomes tasked with escorting a man named Wilbur who will then accompany the player through thick and thin, regardless of how long they take to actually do his questline.
The thing is there is no way to de-aggro him, so this weak nobody just runs off and fights anything he sees. The only benefit to that is everything will start to target him instead of the player, and he will never actually die permanently so his quest won't fail just because he decided to throw himself at a dragon.
9 Does Anyone Actually Want Lydia (Skyrim) Hanging About?
Follow the main plot within Skyrim and eventually, the player will be gifted with the follower Lydia. As with most vanilla followers in the game, she is constantly in the way and making comments that make the player want to mute the game.
More often than not she is condemned to be housecarl for the Breezehome lot that was also given to the player as a thank you gift, one which almost always gets ignored. Especially if Hearthfire is installed and the player can just go to their own customized house instead of dealing with her.
8 Leon, Don't Help Ashley Graham (Resident Evil 4)
A classic of obnoxious followers that fans wish they could have done without is Ashley Graham from Resident Evil 4. The president's daughter herself was kidnapped and no wonder she was so easy to get back. They probably didn't want her two cents every ten seconds either.
She can hardly do anything, she's constantly breaking up otherwise serious moments with her badgering, repeatedly telling the player where the monsters are as if such information is a mystery.
7 Navi (Ocarina Of Time) & The Permanent "Hey! Listen!" Tutorial
Want a constant reminder of how to do things, stop every five steps while a squeaky voice talks about useless facts that really are not needed, and listen through tutorial-like explanations all the way through the final dungeon? Then Ocarina of Time's Navi is waiting to shout their meme-creating line of "Hey! Listen!" a thousand times just for players who like that sort of thing.
It was fine and cute in the tutorial, but after that nobody really needs it nearly as often as they're spewing it. It's the type of thing that a modern game would allow players to deactivate.
6 Donald Duck (Kingdom Hearts), Please, Just Heal Sora
There was a lot that Kingdom Hearts did right, and some? Not so much. Donald Duck, for instance.
The famous duck is the game's resident mage, and while Sora himself might technically make for a better healer, Donald is supposed to be the character set up to do that instead. However, without going into the menus and practically recoding the duck to actually pay attention, he would rather wait to heal Sora until after the player has already done that themselves. That is if he bothers to heal at all.
5 We Could All Use Without The Adoring Fan (Oblivion)
Congratulations Arena Champion! After all of those wonderful fights and all that glorious money won, what is there now but to bask in the hordes of adoring fans?
Don't be tempted to talk to this one in Oblivion though. The quests are not worth it. The rewards are not worth it. It is not worth having this chatty, obnoxious soul following the player. The only things that the Adoring Fan is useful for is creating memes and getting out general video game anger.
4 Paimon (Geishin Impact) Is Cute & Little Else
Paimon in Genshin Impact is cute sure, but that's about all they are. What a self-absorbed, annoying, bratty little girl who is more interested in congratulating herself than actually helping the player.
It's like her only point is to try and force a terrible personality onto the lead, who would otherwise be just tiresome and lackluster. Which, if it meant Paimon didn't have to be around, would actually be an improvement.
3 Shana's (Legend of Dragoon) Replacement Is Less Obnoxious
Despite the fact that Shana has her own disc art, is the protagonist's love interest, and is the source of so much of the early plot of PS1 cult classic Legend of Dragoon, when she is replaced by Miranda it is actually a boon. They are both Light element, both use bows which never actually require any input from the player to use, and are both probably not going to be sitting in the party long term.
Miranda is infinitely more useful, accurate, and doesn't constantly pop in with some useless commentary and constant damsel in distressing that she has going on. Please just pick someone else Dart, she's not worth it.
2 Claptrap (Borderlands 2) Is Annoying Just To Be Annoying
Anyone else sick of a tiny bragging robot that constantly freaks out over the littlest things? There's a reason Claptrap is considered the most annoying character within Borderlands 2, and it's because of it's whiplash personality of overenthusiastic bragging coupled with whining cowardice.
Though, it's no wonder the thing feels lonely. Nobody can stand to be around its annoying little metal body.
1 The Sorry Excuse For A Tank, Alistair (Dragon Age Origins)
It's pretty pathetic when the party tank can't take a hit but the party rogue can. It's worse when the party healer has to spend all their time healing their poor health when they should be able to take a few hits with all that armor.
Alistair from Dragon Age Origins is not meant to be a fighter. He's far too squishy and needs constant micromanaging or else he gets himself slaughtered. Which, with everything else to focus on during combat, is not really something that should be happening.
