Black Widow has finally been released in theaters and it comes with plenty of references to the films that came before and after it, expanding on that time when the Avengers had split. The film also appears to tease the existence of something more that the MCU may bring straight from the comics.
Star David Harbour teased in an interview with ComicBook.com that there are hints throughout Black Widow that the comic book superhero team Winter Guard exist in the MCU. Harbour stated, "I know a lot about those guys, the Sputnik, Crimson Dynamo, and Ursa. And, I think that if you watch the movie closely, I think you can find some stuff in there." He added.
The actor went on to describe how he saw the Winter Guard in relation to the Avengers. "I like this mirrored universe that these guys set up because we've seen The Avengers and what they can do and what they... And there's almost direct parallels in this Winter Guard to each of those characters, like Iron Man, Captain America, Hulk, and I would like to see what a mirrored universe in that way would look like and how that would function as a larger phase."
Harbour appears in Black Widow as Alexei Shostakov, also known as Red Guardian -- the Russian answer to the U.S' Captain America. Red Guardian, created by Roy Thomas and John Buscema, became part of the Winter Guard when the mantle was borne by Josef Petkus, who briefly became Steel Guardian. The Winter Guard were Russia's response to the Avengers and have fought alongside the superhero team in the past.
