Brooklyn Nine-Nine: Hitchcock and Scully's Abilities Came at Weird Times

In the world of Brooklyn Nine-Nine, there's no one less competent at their jobs than Hitchcock and Scully. This formerly dynamic duo used to be the top cops of the precinct. Then, they discovered chicken wings and became the perennial disgusting desk jockeys that fans have come to know and love. But there are times when these two actually manage to come through, and it's always at the strangest times.

It's never been stated exactly how long Michael Hitchcock and Norm Scully have been members of the NYPD. Some stories date them all the way back to the 1980s, still working at the 99. When Adrian Pimento came back from working undercover for more than a decade, they were the only people working there that he recognized. Apparently, they're a permanent fixture of the department.

What has proven to be more consistent than their presence is their inability to do anything right, but that wasn't always the situation. Brooklyn Nine-Nine Season 6, Episode 2 showed them on a case in 1986. Hitchcock and Scully were young, in great shape and incredibly good at their jobs. Again, their discovery of wings led them down a dark path to where they are today. They went from being stars of the 99 to being the albatrosses around the precinct's neck.

Despite their non-stop incompetence, there have actually been times when this duo has actually managed to do a good job. Apparently, the secret is playing to their strengths, particularly food. In Brooklyn Nine-Nine Season 7, Episode 1, Jake was hunting for a shooter who attempted to assassinate a city official. Needing information about local hot dog vendors, he called in Hitchcock and Scully, who knew everything about the subject. They provided a key clue that helped crack the case.

Their incredible food skills also came up in Season 5, Episode 7. Captain Holt's pie was stolen, which upset him greatly. It was a once-a-year treat that he eagerly looked forward to. Kevin, not so much. Holt brought in Hitchcock and Scully, who put their keen food detective skills to good use, tracking it down in the garbage. Their oddly specific skills also helped them work out that Boyle was using a secret bathroom in Season 1, Episode 21.

Things get even stranger when they come through in situations outside of work. When Rosa and Pimento planned on getting married in Brooklyn Nine-Nine Season 4, Episode 6, Amy was put in charge of the wedding. She assigned everyone tasks, and virtually all of them failed miserably. The only people who came through for Amy were Hitchock and Scully, who were put in charge of the seating. And they apparently killed it.

By the standards of most people, such as Gina, Brooklyn Nine-Nine's Hitchcock and Scully were stone-cold atrocities. But when they're in their element, the two of them simply cannot be beaten. That element just has to include some combination of bathrooms, food and sitting for incredibly long periods of time. As long as they aren't asked to do any substantive police work that could possibly have any real impact, Hitchcock and Scully are actually half-decent detectives.

Brooklyn Nine-Nine stars Andy Samberg, Andre Braugher, Terry Crews, Melissa Fumero, Stephanie Beatriz, Joe Lo Truglio, Dirk Blocker and Joel McKinnon Miller. Season 8 will premiere on NBC on Aug 12.
