Dragon Ball 10 Most Defensive Characters, Ranked | CBR

Within the world of shonen fighting anime, most people don't think of Dragon Ball when coming up with defensive characters.  Most of the time, the battle is about being as strong as possible and which character is capable of the most destructive force.  But that's not to say there aren't plenty of characters who are skilled with fighting defensively.

Whether it's because the character has a specific technique that makes fighting defensively possible, or their fighting style is just geared toward deflecting blows rather than dealing out damage, there are some characters in the Dragon Ball universe that are more noteworthy for their defense than their offensive capabilities.

10 Guldo Protects Himself By Stopping Time

Guldo was bad at nearly everything when it came to fighting. He wasn’t strong, he didn’t have the instincts, and he was terrified of actual combat. The only thing working in his favor was his ability to stop time. With that, the character was always able to mount a defense. When he battled against Gohan and Krillin, he was able to counter their attacks by freezing them at the right moment and then sneaking away. In fact, if Guldo had worked in tandem with Recoome or Burter, they would have instantly won their battle on Namek.

9 Cell Can Regenerate From A Single Cell

Cell is introduced as a fighter who’s technically good at everything. The entire point is that he’s copied everything from people who made up specific moves, right down to their genetic structure. With that in mind, Cell’s defense comes largely from his Namekian abilities. He is capable of regenerating from any injury, which means someone will have to attack him with enough energy to completely wipe him out without a trace or else he’ll still regenerate.

8 Majin Buu's Unique Body Makes Him Difficult To Hurt

Majin Buu was one of the most destructive forces in the entire galaxy, wiping out planets with ease. The only character who came close to being able to stop him was the Old Kai of that era. But what makes Majin Buu so dangerous goes beyond his strength. In the Buu Saga, he doesn’t even seem capable of being destroyed at first. Vegeta uses a detonation technique that completely destroys him, but Buu regenerates and seems like he isn’t any the worse for wear from it.

7 Fused Zamasu Is An Immortal Who Can Regenerate From Anything

After everyone pushed Zamasu to his limit, the Supreme-Kai-in-training fused with his other self, Goku Black. But even without that, Zamasu himself is completely immortal. He was already ageless, but with the Dragon Balls, the character became impossible to completely wipe out.

Even when he was finally defeated by Trunks’ Super Saiyan Rage mode and his energy sword, he managed to survive and fuse with the fabric of the universe instead.

6 Mr. Popo Is Easily Able To Block & Counter Super Saiyans

Though it definitely isn't true, Mr. Popo somehow feels like the angels with Autonomous Ultra Instinct. It’s frequently been implied that the limit of the character’s power has been much higher than what everyone might assume it to be. Mr. Popo was shown easily blocking Goten and Trunks’ attacks during the Buu Saga. This would be impressive enough on its own, but he managed to do so while they were in Super Saiyan form. This was done for the sake of comedy, but even still, no one’s ever shown the full power of Mr. Popo’s strength.

5 Tien Invented The Ultimate Defensive Technique

Tien was responsible for many of the more unique techniques that were learned after Dragon Ball. He came up with the Multi-Form, and he was the one who taught the other characters how to fly. But what made him a true master of defensive fighting was coming up with the Solar Flare. That technique, one that could only be used when the sun was out, was used by nearly everyone relevant in the series at some point or another, as they needed to make quick getaways when things went poorly for them.

4 Android 17's Energy Barrier Allowed Him To Survive A Number Of Fights He Should Have Lost

During the Tournament of Power, Android 17 revealed he might be the best defensive character the Z Fighters have. The character was not only able to keep up with enemies who were as powerful as Goku in his Super Saiyan Blue form, but he also managed to defeat several as well.

But the real key to the character's defense was his Android Barrier, which was able to survive some of the most powerful attacks seen in the series. Though Jiren and Top were able to destroy those barriers, they still allowed him to survive long enough to be the only person left standing at the end of the Tournament of Power.

3 Master Roshi Showed Off A Version Of Ultra Instinct In The Manga

Master Roshi is one of the oldest characters in the series who isn’t a god. He has been fighting for several centuries, staying young by drinking a special elixir. Of course, with centuries of practice, the character has learned how to put the least amount of effort into getting maximum results. In the manga, this manifested in him showing Goku how to use Ultra Instinct. Roshi wasn’t able to completely show him how to use it, but he was able to give Goku a glimpse, and that was enough to help Goku beat Jiren.

2 Vados Has Autonomous Ultra Instinct Activated At All Times

Vados is much like her brother Whis, in that she was responsible for training the god of destruction from her universe. It’s known that both Whis and Vados are more powerful than their respective gods of destruction, but Vados may also be stronger than Whis. Though the two haven’t practiced with one another in a millennia, when they last fought, Vados was actually the superior fighter. And much like Whis, Vados is always in the Ultra Instinct state, making it impossible for anyone to land attacks on her.

1 Whis Can't Actually Fight Back, But He Can Easily Dodge & Block Any Attack

The angels were introduced in Dragon Ball Super and they’re all basically the people responsible for watching over the gods of destruction. This is a good thing, since some of the gods of destruction can often be lazy or overactive in their jobs. Having said that, as powerful as the angels are, they’re actually not allowed to interfere with the affairs of mortals. Even those in training will be completely erased from existence if they fight at all, which is why Whis never actually attacks anyone he’s training with and instead chooses to dodge any attack.
