It’s truly impressive how Akira Toriyama’s Dragon Ball franchise has been able to endure for multiple decades. If anything, its latest chapter, Dragon Ball Super, has rejuvenated interest in the property and brought on a greater level of fandom than ever before. Dragon Ball Super continues the exciting shonen series and remains true to its origins, but it also isn’t afraid to mix up the formula and push Dragon Ball into new and exciting territory.
Dragon Ball Super features Goku and company at their absolute strongest, but the anime also introduces a wealth of powerful celestial beings who trump everything that has come before them. Whis, Universe 7’s Angel, has become a Dragon Ball Super mainstay, but he’s also an individual who’s incredibly overpowered for a number of reasons.
10 He Can Reverse Time
The characters in Dragon Ball Super have achieved such unbelievable levels of strength that it’s sometimes difficult to create plausible stakes and villains who actually seem dangerous. This becomes even more of an issue when death can be reversed in Dragon Ball through various means. One of the worst situations that the Earth experiences involves Golden Frieza’s successful destruction of the planet. Whis takes matters into his own hands and rewinds time to give the heroes another chance. Whis explains that this “Temporal Do-Over” ability can reverse time up to three minutes, which is a substantial window to turn the tables.
9 He’s Immortal & His Strength Prohibits Him From Getting Involved In Mortal Matters
Goku and Vegeta have basically acquired power that’s comparable to Gods, but there are still ample occasions where Super Saiyan Blue or even Ultra Instinct strength still isn’t enough to trigger a victory. Whis’ power is so immense that he’s actually forbidden from stepping in to solve the problems of mortals. Additionally, Whis is immortal and the only way that he can be eliminated is if he experiences eradication through breaking the stringent rules that govern Angels. He’s literally so overpowered that he’s not allowed to fight, which is a disclaimer that doesn’t accompany anyone else.
8 His Transportation Cube Allows For Easy Multi-Dimensional Travel
Dragon Ball begins as a terrestrial series, but the characters slowly venture to other planets, and ultimately entirely new universes and dimensions, as bigger threats are encountered. To match the growing scope of Dragon Ball, characters have become more efficient with their means of transportation, whether it’s flight or abilities that are akin to teleportation.
Whis trumps all of this with his personal Transportation Cube that’s able to both house and facilitate travel between universes. Whis’ Warp ability also allows him to transport himself, and others, across dimensions and time.
7 Angels Are Routinely More Powerful Than Gods Of Destruction
Dragon Ball Super brings both Gods of Destruction and Angels into the mix. The name of the former is certainly more intimidating, not to mention that Beerus’ grouchy demeanor naturally makes Gods of Destruction seem like the more dangerous of the duo. Whis and the other Angels may take a more reserved approach, but most Angels are actually stronger than their corresponding God of Destruction. In the case of Beerus and Whis, Whis actually provided Beerus with the bulk of his training. Dragon Ball Super demonstrates Beerus’ overwhelming power, which in turn speaks volumes for what Whis can accomplish.
6 He Can Accelerate Pregnancies
Dragon Ball has a habit to suddenly announce new abilities out of the blue and during incredibly convenient moments. Often there’s some justification behind these skills and there’s some hint toward its appearance, but others are much more random and feel like easy solutions to storytelling problems. In one of Vegeta’s more touching gestures towards his wife, he announces that he refuses to leave Bulma’s side and participate in the Tournament of Power as long as Bulma is still pregnant. Whis circumvents this obstacle by accelerating Bulma’s birth so that Bulla can be born ahead of schedule.
5 His Angel Attendant's Staff Can See Through Time & Resurrect The Dead
There are some very fashionable outfits and accessories that begin to define powerful characters in the Dragon Ball universe. Whis’ appearance is quite austere, with one of his signature touches being the opulent Angel Attendant Staff that’s never far away from him.
Whis can use this staff as a formidable weapon in battle, but it’s also full of extremely helpful abilities. Whis can see into the past and present with this staff as he uses it to move through time, and it’s even able to resurrect the dead, provided that they haven’t been killed by a demon.
4 The Grand Minister Is His Father
Dragon Ball Super makes it seem like Whis and Beerus are at the top of the celestial ladder. They’re vital to Universe 7’s protection, but there are other entities that hold dominion over all 12 of the different universes. At the very top of everything is the Grand King Zeno, as well as the Grand Minister who is typically by his side. Whis reveals that the Grand Minister is actually his father. It’s unlikely that the Grand Minister would break rules for his son, but this relationship still leaves Whis in excellent standing with the highest echelon of celestial beings.
3 He’s Not Interested In The Dragon Balls
It shouldn’t come as a surprise in a franchise named Dragon Ball that the titular orbs are going to serve an important purpose. The utility of the Dragon Balls has shifted throughout the course of the franchise, but they’re routinely something that the anime returns to, and they’re still items that the most powerful beings in the universe desire. Whis remains completely indifferent to the Dragon Balls, and there’s nothing that he desires or would use them on. This is a strong reflection of just how much Whis has and the level of power within him.
2 He Can Attain Ultra Instinct & God Of Destruction Abilities
The most recent adventures in Dragon Ball Super have Goku and Vegeta in the middle of rigorous training that will ideally allow them to master power that’s comparable to both Beerus and Whis. It’s exciting to think of Goku and Vegeta with such strength, but these training sessions do an even better job to illustrate how they’re truly no match for Whis. Goku has only recently mastered Autonomous Ultra Instinct for a brief period of time, but it’s a skill that Whis can trigger at will. The same is true for Beerus’ trademark Hakai destruction maneuver, which Whis also knows.
1 He Possesses Exceptional Knowledge Over The Multiverse
It comes as a major shock to both the audiences and the characters in Dragon Ball Super when it’s revealed that their entire universe is just one of 12 universes in a much larger realm of existence. Dragon Ball’s characters are understandably clueless when it comes to the matters of the multiverse, the existence of the Super Dragon Balls and the rules behind them, and even the temperamental nature of Zeno. Whis breaks down all of these fundamental concepts for them, and his extreme knowledge over everything makes him infinitely helpful in any scenario, wherever he is.
