Those who attend the 2021 Emmys ceremonies or Broadway theater productions in New York City will be required to show proof of vaccination against the coronavirus (COVID-19).
The Broadway League announced a vaccination mandate for all 41 Broadway theaters in NYC through October, with audience members also required to wear masks, confirmed The Hollywood Reporter. That said, guests may remove their masks while eating or drinking in a designated area in each venue. In the cases of exceptions for children under 12, those with a medical condition or people whose religious beliefs prevent them from being vaccinated, they must offer either evidence of a negative COVID-19 test taken within 72 hours or a negative COVID-19 antigen test taken within six hours of the start of a performance.
“As vaccination has proven the most effective way to stay healthy and reduce transmission, I’m pleased that the theatre owners have decided to implement these collective safeguards at all our Broadway houses,” said Charlotte St. Martin, president of the Broadway League. “A uniform policy across all New York City Broadway theatres makes it simple for our audiences and should give even more confidence to our guests about how seriously Broadway is taking audience safety.”
In a similar development, the Academy of Television Arts and Sciences announced those attending this year's Creative Arts Emmy Awards ceremony or the main Emmy Awards ceremony must offer proof of vaccination against COVID-19. This decision comes in response to the rise in COVID-19 cases attributed to the spread of the Delta variant, leading areas like Los Angeles County to once again mandate wearing masks indoors at public locations for vaccinated and non-vaccinated people alike.
2021's Creative Arts Emmy Awards ceremony will take place on Sept. 11 and 12, with the main Emmys show hosted by Cedric the Entertainer happening on Sept. 19. Nominees include the Disney+ shows The Mandalorian and WandaVision, which received 24 and 23 nominations respectively. The Mandalorian tied Netflix's The Crown for the most Emmy nods this year, while Apple TV+'s Ted Lasso secured the most nominations ever for a freshman comedy series with 20.
As for Broadway, ticket holders for shows through to the end of October will receive steady reminders about the vaccination and mask mandate. The policies will undergo a review in September and could be relaxed come November, depending on the status of the pandemic at that juncture.
