Magic: The Gathering has unveiled Swarming Goblins, the latest card included in the Adventures in the Forgotten Realms set.
Wizards of the Coast has provided CBR with the exclusive first look at the upcoming Magic: The Gathering card. Swarming Goblins implements a d20 mechanic designed to pay homage to Dungeons & Dragons, the inspiration behind Adventures in the Forgotten Realms. The player who uses Swarming Goblins must roll a 20-sided die, following instructions based on whatever number is rolled.

Rolling between a one and nine results in the creation of a 1/1 red Goblin creature token. Rolling a 10-19 will result in two of the aforementioned creature tokens, while a 20 will conjure forth three tokens. Lucky players will be able to generate a decent amount of value after playing Swarming Goblins, even if the cost of the card is somewhat steep.
Given the potential to overrun opponents, Swarming Goblins will likely mainly see play in aggressive decks that promote Goblin synergies. The card could offer players already in the lead an opportunity to further the gap... if luck favors their roll, that is.
Adventures in the Forgotten Realms translates several iconic Dungeons & Dragons characters and mechanics into the Magic: The Gathering format. Wizards of the Coast has already revealed the new Venture mechanic, which allows players to dive into mysterious dungeons for rewards.
"The goal with Adventures in the Forgotten Realms is to tell a story while giving Dungeons & Dragons players familiar gameplay elements and for players who aren't as familiar accessible and fun ways to play Magic," said Meris Mullaley, Wordldbuilding Design Manager behind the expansion.
Adventures in the Forgotten Realms will be available in Magic Online and Magic: The Gathering Arena on July 8. The tabletop set will launch globally on July 23.
