How Loki's Finale Sets Up Season 2 | CBR

WARNING: The following contains spoilers for Loki Episode 6, "For All Time. Always," streaming now on Disney+.

Fans worried that the first season of Loki would be Tom Hiddleston's Marvel Studios swansong can breathe a sigh of relief because the series has been renewed, confirming rumors that it would return for another outing. But as welcome as that news is, there's a great deal of uncertainty heading into Season 2. With Loki's first season ending on a massive cliffhanger with serious implications for the Marvel Cinematic Universe, here's where the major players were left and what that could mean for Season 2.

Judge Ravonna Renslayer spends most of her screen time in Loki's finale frantically preparing to leave the TVA. Early in the episode, Miss Minutes downloads some files to her TemPad at the direction of He Who Remains, who was actually a more benevolent version of Kang. But before she can get a look at them, Renslayer is confronted by Mobius, who ended any chance of her retaining control by revealing her variant identity to the rest of the TVA.

However, Renslalayer's interaction with Mobius reveals that she's as in the dark about the TVA's true origins as everyone else. Before she leaves her former workplace, she tells Mobius she's in search of free will, which could lead to her fulfilling her comic book role as Kang's most trusted ally.

Mobius and B-15 are able to reveal the truth about the TVA to their fellow agents in the finale, but their triumph is fleeting, as the timeline quickly branches out wildly following Kang's death. The headquarters then goes into full crisis mode, and with Renslayer gone and He Who Remains no longer protecting the timeline, Mobius and B-15 initially appear to be in charge of the TVA. Unfortunately, that means they're left holding the bag as temporal chaos breaks out.

However, when Loki returns from the Citadel and tries to tell them about what happened, they treat him like a generic analyst they've never seen before, instead of the man that helped them learn the truth about their existence. Loki then notices a statue of He Who Remains firmly planted in the TVA, confirming that his fears about the new villain's variants have come to pass and his friends were caught in the crossfire.

Loki finds himself in unfamiliar territory at the end of Season 1, choosing someone else over himself. He's offered the chance to cheat death and the throne he's always craved by Kang, but he chooses his love for Sylvie over all of it. Unfortunately for him, she has other priorities. Despite sharing a passionate kiss, Sylvie rejects Loki, sending him back to the TVA before murdering He Who Remains.

When viewers last see Sylvie, she's slumped on the floor of the Citadel as the timelines begin to branch, witnessing the consequences of her actions. Now, both versions of the God of Mischief are stuck in an unfamiliar place without each other there to back them up. Their bond has also been broken, though it's unlikely the finale was the last MCU fans see of the odd couple.

Created by Michael Waldron and directed by Kate Herron, Loki stars Tom Hiddleston as Loki, Owen Wilson as Mobius M. Mobius, Gugu Mbatha-Raw as Ravonna Renslayer, Wunmi Mosaku as Hunter B-15, Tara Strong as Miss Minutes, Eugene Cordero as Casey, Sasha Lane as Hunter C-20 and Sophia Di Martino as Sylvie, with Richard E. Grant and Jack Veal. Season 1 is currently streaming on Disney+.
