How Netflix's Young Royals Sets Up Season 2 | CBR

WARNING: The following contains major spoilers for Season 1 of Young Royals, now streaming on Netflix.

In Netflix's Young Royals, the first season left the Hillerska Boarding School students with a lot to ponder after the scandal that ensued. Prince Wilhelm (Edvin Ryding) had a sex tape leaked with Simon (Omar Rudberg), throwing the Royal Family into a media frenzy to cover it up. However, Wilhelm soon discovered family's the last thing he can trust as they want to hide his queer identity.

With that in mind, let's dissect what Season 2 could offer.

Wilhelm loves Simon and before he left for Christmas break, he embraced him in front the school, which let everyone know that despite Wilhelm denying that it was him on the tape, he cares affectionately for Simon. Season 2 can focus on if Wilhelm will ignore his family and come out as they're pressuring him to marry a woman to produce an heir after Prince Erik died.

Simon is harboring hope but it would be an intriguing surprise if someone else came into Simon's life. He did hint that he can't wait on Wilhelm, and as they're 18, Simon might want to experiment and see other people. It's already unfair to him, so a love triangle might be what's needed to get Wilhelm out of the closet, which won't be easy with the paparazzi sure to stalk and frustrate the prince.

Wilhelm's second cousin, August, accidentally recorded the boys, but decided to leak it when Wilhelm embarrassed him in front of the lads. Wilhelm's family are now paying August's tuition as his estate is broke, all so August doesn't rock the ship anymore. But seeing as how superficial and sinister August is, he may start blackmailing them more.

He's desperate to remain in the elite section of society, and seeing that his mom's trysts with losers and his dad's suicide all drove him to self-medicate, August could become truly unhinged if he keeps drugging up in Season 2. It can shape a dangerous game with him and Wilhelm, but there's also a minor chance that he redeems himself. He can look after Wilhelm, like Erik always wanted, as August was shocked to know Wilhelm asked to pay his fees before the controversy.

Simon's sister, Sara, has been having romantic flings with August, despite knowing what he did. She's desperate to be an elite too as she hates the poor life she had. Being diagnosed with ADHD hasn't made it easier, and August is promising to help her, so she and him may form a shady alliance. Sara has shown she's willing to backstab her own family, after all.

She could become the villain of Season 2 once Felice, her best friend who dated August, finds out what's up. Felice discovered what August did to Wilhelm and spilled the news, so she'd be pissed to find out Sara's secret as Felice cares for Wilhelm a lot. What could also influence Sara's ultimate path is the relationship with her drunk dad, who's trying to get back into their lives. She hates Simon for dealing with him but Simon has hinted that there's room for forgiveness.

The elite males in school form the Society -- a frat club -- but there'll be drama to come as some will side with Wilhelm while the older guys may stick with August. It's going to be a nasty civil war, as Wilhelm got the guys to say Alexander sold them drugs, saving Simon from getting kicked out of his scholarship. An expelled Alexander could plot for Wilhelm, with August egging him on.

In addition, if Wilhelm takes over as the leader, he'll have to address the guys' classist ways as this is the foundation of xenophobia in the school towards poor kids and minorities like Simon. Given that they can tell Wilhelm's gay, it'll be interesting to see who's genuine, and if these toxic males and their fragile egos can indeed be helped.

Young Royals is an original Netflix production, starring Edvin Ryding, Pernilla August, Malte GÃ¥rdinger, Frida Argento, Nikita Uggla, Samuel Astor and Omar Rudberg. Season 1 is now available on Netflix.
